Why isn't "Machine Doubling" Considered an Error?

NICKELS have smooth edges. So do blanks and planchets used for nickels so what! As to the upturned rims, the piece was probably a type 2 blank (planchet).

Here is the problem that needs to be corrected. For decades, "planchet" and "blank" even "blank planchet" were terms that were tossed around by all of us who should have known better. This still goes on to a limited degree - habit. To my limited knowledge, this label should have said "cent planchet" but everyone who is knowledgeable knows what it is.

May I please have some more by the time I return.

This got slabbed as a "40% split layer obverse" by PCGS. Clearly, this was a clamshell that someone took a sharp tool to pry off, but the layer broke off. You can see the scratch marks all over. At 2 o'clock, you can see where the tool likely first went in, then makes its way to the center of the planchet. You also see bending and raised metal along the vertical line - evidence that it was bent with force. I feel strongly someone wanted this to detach as a whole piece because a fully separated obverse layer, and the remaining planchet now missing the obverse layer, are worth more than a clamshell usually.

This should have been rejected or slabbed as damaged and was an attempted enhancement and was damaged after the fact.

I will sit back and wait to be insulted...again...

News flash...Asking someone to back up a claim IS NOT AN INSULT. Your first example was NOT a TPGS mistake as you claimed. The latest ones are. I agree 100% with your opinion of this coin. Due to what we see, the missing clad has PRBABLY been pried off.

PS I'm not the enemy. This can be a very deceptive alteration. Not one I should miss either.

 

Asking me to back something up is not what was insulting. Maybe tone is lost, but you came across that I am somehow lying or ignorant in that I have many mislabeled and misattributed slabs when I likely don't. I get it. There are many liars on this forum. But I figured you knew me a little better than you do in that I am a good soul who is a good ambassador for the hobby.

As for some of the wrong labels, some I had corrected, some I purposely don't want corrected; they make good educational pieces. I also trade them with others who have their own. I know what's in them, so I really don't care what the label says. Should I ever sell them, I will have them corrected.

Honestly, I am done posting these on this thread. I tried to make my point and think I did a decent job backing things up.

Well, keep in mind, I also have no idea when certain terms started being used. I also might not even be correct. These are my opinions, of course, and we know what those are worth
