Ok, this probably sounds like a series of really dumb questions for those who collect paper money, but as a strictly coin collecter, I have little...ok, no knowledge whatsoever on paper, even though I own several books on it. Anyways, I always save the star notes I find in circulation, such as the one pictured below I found yesterday. But, how on earth do you find out it's circulation run and series to see if it's worth anything? I see the one below was printed in Fort Worth because of the FW,but thats as much as I know about bills. Any help with how to read a bill would be greatly appreciated.

Just to see if I'm reading the charts right, it looks like a 2003 A series, sixth run, district F for 385,000 notes. Don't know if I read them correctly, as I don't have a clue what to look for, but thats my best guess.

I looks to me like it's in the 5th run (F 12800001* - F 16000000, and F 14391846* falls in that range). It also means that there were 3,200,000 star notes in that run.

Again, in my opinion, a star is worth keeping, especially if it's a low denomination.

    No - Run 5 - 3.2M - 12800001 to 1600000

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to learn this note stuff, but it's a slow process.

    Eh, I tend to disagree.
I've seen a 5$ star note come into work, and it was really beat up: very worn and had multiple tears on the edges.
I would say, a note like that would take YEARS to appreciate in value - and after you fix for inflation, its probably not worth it! lol
    (it was a Series 2001 I believe)

Well, that there is the differance between us :) i collect them because i like to, not because i care about their climbing in value. I do hope they do, yes, but it not why i collect them. :D

But i do agree with you... most modern notes (with a few exceptions yes) that are heavily circulated, stars included, will take a long time to be worth more then face. And like you said, after inflation is factored in... cripe, you might lose money lol

No paper money should be collected as an "investment". You'll almost always lose (even if you win).

Rather, it's a hobby to be enjoyed and appreciated.

    That said,

how many here actually know someone who collects star notes by "run"?

I personally collect them by series and district, but not with respect to run or facility (although I might expand it to one for each facility in the future).

Daggar, would you save a super-worn out note?
    Im just wondering.

I try to get a series - like 1999 - that contains 1 of each district in UNC and I try to get 2 for district F - which is printed in both Washington and FW.

So that would give me a 13 note district set for a specific series...I have (if I remember correctly) the 1999 district star note set in UNC, plus 2001 and I think one other one right now.

    Smaugy.....;)

is it a star? then absolutely, 100% of the time!

also, if it is a non-star note older then 1995, then yes, but depends on denomination ... im not rich lol

for my 1's.. i collect 1 from each district for each mint. These days that usually translates to just a full district set, but sometimes a district will have notes printed at both facilities. But i do not bother with individual print runs within each district.

Interesting, I should have saved that 1$ star that came in today.
It was too worn for me. lol I was thinking of sending it to you though. lol
