Hello CT peeps! Recently picked up this twenty cent piece. I would like opinions on grade, how much YOU would pay for it, and whether or not I should get it slabbed. Kicks
It looks harshly cleaned, and in Vg-8 or lower. That said I think you might get 150 dollars for that coin. IMO Dont try to get it slabbed, it will come back in a body bag
Does it looked cleaned or whizzed to you? It looks like it was whizzed, but still IMO, a nice coin. $150? Seriously? I didn't pay nearly that much for it. Kicks
Well, I would defiantly pay much more than $35! I would grade it F-12, and the cleaning might get it down to VG, but I don't know. You have a REALLY nice coin, great! But I would say it has F-12 details at the very least.
F-20 and I like it. :thumb: I'm not as picky as some here so I can appreciate a great coin even if it isn't AU/MS and your coin doesn't look like it has any rim dings that would count against its grade. So, other than it being cleaned, I don't see anything wrong with it. Coin on! :thumb: Ribbit
One of my favorite coins but it has taken a harsh cleaning as well as being the most common date. IF I were to buy it I'd pay $40 and sell it for $50. Looks a bit better than VG to me but the cleaning really does knock it down. That's just me though. If you like it for a type piece and got a good deal keep until you get a better one. I've knowingly bought cleaned coins that I needed if the price was right. If you upgrade for for a nice grey coin. Tend to be more original. It won't slab by a reputable service. clembo
Will someone please read to me from a grading book, on what constitutes a F-8 or F-12? Because what I see is a shield with all vertical & horizontal bars still faintly visible and a faint LIBERTY in the diagonal bar and clear and distinct drapery folds, with full frontal facial features (side of the face is worn), along with a strong date. Then, on the reverse, most feathers visible on the eagle but worn, and leaf detail on the olive branch in the right claw, and a strong legend. There are no rim dings that would count against it and the whizzing isn't as apparent as is discussed because the marks are in all different directions, which tends to be circulation marks and not whizzing, since whizzing is superficial and not as deep as the marks being described as whizz marks. This coin has been dipped, not whizzed and it has minimal wear, so someone please quote a grading guide that says all of that is a F-8 or F-12? I don't see that! I see a solid EF-20. Ribbit Ps: F-20 Scratched.
Geez Toad, I know my vision is questionable but I sure don't see all of that. Reverse looks stronger to me and it DOES look like it took a pretty harsh cleaning. I never said it was whizzed but it DID take a good scrub. Not wasting my time on a grading guide. Oh what the heck. ANA "Obverse: Less than half the details show in the hair. Head, shoulder, breast and legs are worn but bold. Every letter in LIBERTY is visible but weak. Reverse: Wings are worn, but three quarters of the details in breast feathers are clear. Head is flat." Toss in the harsh cleaning and it's a VG in my book. I was looking for an 1875CC at the Long Beach show and saw a raw F12 that was grey and had better detail than this coin. Hey man, I'm not knocking the coin but it's not VF20. clembo
Just goes to show, I suck at grading silver. Ribbit Ps: Here's a perfect example of a coin that has been harshly cleaned: http://cgi.ebay.com/AMAZING-1878-CC...6QQcmdZViewItemQQssPageNameZRSS:B:SRCH:US:101 The OP coin doesn't show the whizz marks that coin shows and it was such an awesome coin. sorry to say, but I agree. The eagle on the reverse looks like a dead bird (or a pigeon). But, if I had ever found anything but the usual 1875 S, I would have gone for it.
Even though it's harshly cleaned and the most common date, I'd say F on the grade. None of the 20 cent coins had fantastic strike details. I'd say it's worth about 50-75 dollars as is, just because they are hard to find in most any grade and condition. Guy~
VG-8 -very harshly cleaned , $40-$50 rzage I don't mind a well cleaned ( original luster all there ) MS coin , but dont think circulated coins should be cleaned . This coin was over cleaned .
Ok guys, thanks for your opinions. A bit of a range on value, from 20 cents to $150. The coin was marked as VG, and I payed $102 for it. I hope this particular coin will increase in value as the rarity of twenty cent pieces continues to increase. I talked to another dealer at the same show about it, and he offered me $130 for it on the spot. The picture doesn't do any justice for the luster on the reverse (the luster caused the reflection of the flash). Also, the cleaning probably took place quite a while ago, because there definitely appears that there is some oxidation taking place on top of the cleaning, but not shown by the pictures because I have a sucky photo taking setup. Thanks again for your opinions. Kicks
