Heritage is closing tonight and I managed to grab this one. I have always been interested in this type because of the reverse. The reverse shows Caius on horseback. However, I also find the portrait quite attractive. Please post your coins of Augustus. Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (18mm, 11h). NGC VF, edge cut, scratch. Lugdunum, ca. 8 BC. DIVI•F-AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Augustus right / C•CAES / AVGVS F, Gaius Caesar on horseback galloping right, sword in left hand, reins in right; legionary eagle between two standards behind. RIC I 199.
One of my favorites is this provincial from Amphipolis ... ... because it's an obverse die-match to the British Museum example ... ... which shows how valuable a good LINE DRAWING can be!
Very nice coin and hard to come by Orfew, with a terrific portrait looks a bit older than on my coin of the same type. Augustus, 8-7 BC, Gaius Caesar galloping right, AR Denarius, 18mm, 3.28gm, RIC 199, Sear 1596.
Nice pick up, Andrew! That portrait almost reminds me of Agrippa... My cat is trying to prevent me from posting. Sweet pickup, Orfew! Here’s my Augustus. You do not want to see the other dude! Erin
This is my only coin of Augustus: RIC 171a; BMC175 3.82g. Purchased at a coin show from Jonathan Kern, Feb, 1987
Just picked this up on Saturday...also picked up an Octavian denarius from the same collection, but can't get a good photo of it. A lovely coin! Looks like you bought that from Robert. He is very good to deal with. I have bought from him several times.
@Orfew Yes! It’s from Robert! I’ve purchased a few coins from him as well... very knowledgeable and fair price wise! Will post the Octavian once I get a better picture.
