    I got a 1999 $10 star note the other day and I wanted to look up the value, but I can't figure out how to tell what city/district it came from. How can you tell? Thanks in advance.

    can you right out the serial number? the letter before the numbers can tell what district it came from.

    From the serial number

    B = 1999
    K = Dallas

    Klunky,

    Gatzdon gave you the answer and you found an easy way on your own. K11 also gives it away as a Dallas note. Here's the list for you of all 12.

    A1 Boston
    B2 New York
    C3 Philadelphia
    D4 Cleveland
    E5 Richmond
    F6 Atlanta
    G7 Chicago
    H8 St. Louis
    I9 Minneapolis
    J10 Kansas City
    K11 Dallas
    L12 San Francisco

    The number you found with the FW means it was printed at the Fort Worth facility. If there is no FW it was printed in Washington D.C.
    This can matter as well as in some series' notes will be printed at both facilities. Most common for Atlanta (F6) notes and it can have an affect on value.

    Welcome to paper money. It's an entirely different animal.

    Unfortunatly, i dont think your note will carry much of a premium above face value. Still a star, still a keeper in my book :)

    I'll bet there are one or two others here who are old enough to remember when the name of the Federal Reserve District was actually included on the face of each bill. That was before the changeover from "greenbacks" to "monopoly money".

    They are still on the $1 and $2 bills. I use those as my cheat sheet. I "know" them all, but can't always recall them on demand.

    Thanks. Good info here. I have a paper money value book that I looked through, but I couldn't find where it said which letters indicated the cities and which ones did not...on the newer bills that don't write out the name. Now I know. Thought it kind of odd to make that kind of thing so hard to find. Google wasn't much help either...I'm sure the right combo of keywords would've helped, but I didn't find them.
