These are called Serrated, just like many steak knives that have a serrated edge today. Some ancient coin theories state that it was a way to thwart folks from clipping the edges of coins, especially silver and gold, to steal some value away from them. I think for AE coins, it was a cool design that can distinguish them. The Seleukids had several serrated coins. Rome had various Denarii that were serrated, and I have an unusual version from the Carthage Empire that was. This was one of the last series of coins that Carthage struck before they were exterminated by the Romans. Serrated: Carthage Third Punic War Serrate Double Shekel 149-146 BCE 12.8g 26mm Wreathd Tanit-Horse pellet raised leg SNG COP 404
Thanks! One day I felt that I needed a bottlecap. Did some searching, and WOW, that cool coin came onto my radar!
Great coin, @Shrews1994 ! Seleucids have some very beautiful portraits on them, they’re fun to collect, and the cost of the bronzes is fairly low and reasonable. I have a couple of Antiochus VIII denominations. One of them features my one and only owl
