http://www.whitmanexpo.com/Default.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1 Here's that link to the information about the Baltimore coin show next weekend, June 5-7. I plan on going on Saturday the 7th.
My baby is graduating HS on Sat the 7th I don't know if she would forgive me for missing it (The graduation not the coin show). So I'll be passing on this show plus with gas and parking I was wondering if it would have been worth the trip. Hope you have a great time and look forward to hearing about your finds!
Be aware. Saturday is the 7th. This is a Thurs/Fri/Sat show. Why? Because too many dealers were copping out early Sunday or not showing up at all on Sunday. They wanted to get home early enough to be ready for normal business on Monday. Almost an echo in the showroom with so many gone. BTW, I'm going Thursday. Don't bother going after that. I'll have bought all the good stuff
what makes you say this - the ANA show is right on it's heels and many dealers did not book for the June show because of the 4 show rule (which has now been modified). i know many dealers that will be walking the floor instead of having tables - it will be a dealer buyer show - many JQ Public will be looking to sell coins. i do not see that many great deals being found in the dealer cases - the recent price rollercoaster of gold and silver will have many looking to buy since it is down, but if dealers bought high, they won't be moving bullion. i personally think it will be a so-so show - no more Sunday, dealer day is compressed into Thursday morning until 2pm when JQ Public is allowed in. i can only speak for the World dealers, i'm not in tune with a great number of US dealers right now. we'll see... i'll try to go on Thursday, but i won't go out of my way. -Steve
Dont forget the ANA right after. It will have the Stewart Blay collection which includes the finest registery set of Lincolns,( and all cents ), ever assembled, and will be on display to the public. I am still trying to find a way to get to that one.
Great show. Not good for the working people, but we retirees have free run of the place. Plenty of space to move around AND the dealers weren't so busy so that they could chat with the customers. What did I get? Starting from the cheap end: 1. An UNC roll of "P" and "D" Arizona state quarters. 2. A 1945-S Jefferson PCGS MS-65FS. That completes my War Nickels in UNC Full Steps. Tough coin to find and the key to that short set. 3. A 1798 Cent, 2nd Hair Style. Got it raw and walked it right over to the NGC table for an Early Bird grading (about 14 days.) There's divided opinion (by those who know) whether this coin will even get slabbed. Apparently the thinking is, if there's any doubt PCGS and NGC won't slab a coin. If it DOES get slabbed, I'm pulling for an XF-40, but reality says VF-something. If it gets body bagged, the dealer will refund my money. And now for the last coin I bought. 4. An 1877 Indian Head Cent, PCGS XF-45. The guy I bought it from is my favorite dealer and a small cent specialist. Apparently the 1877's are notorious for weak strikes, almost to the point that a full strike doesn't exist. My XF-45 has a better strike than an AU-53 that he had. The -53 was graded that way because of having a lot of mint red. He even showed me an MS-65 and an MS-66. On both of them the diamonds were weak so they are not used as markers for grading. Apparently the neck beads and something else(?) are the primary diagnostics. I'll have pictures of the IHC and Jeff tomorrow or Sat, and the 1798 cent when it comes back.
We are set up there and, although I am confined to the office until Saturday, I was told that the activity today was pretty brisk.
Awesome Kanga. Sounds like You had a great time, and I hope I will too. Hopefully I'm not working Saturday (Or studying for Final exams), so I can head out. B-more is only about a 1.5 hour drive from the Outer Philly Suburbs, so hopefully I can take route 1 all the way down w/o any problems. I only have made transactions with table 1652 (I don't know if we are allowed to say their names for privacy purposes), and Table 957 in the past. Are there any other tables that anyone is happy to be buying with? Here's the list of tables/names. http://www.whitmanexpo.com/contentPages/Dealers_Baltimore.aspx
For high end small cents, Table 553 is a "must look". Anyway, here's some of what I got. This first coin I didn't get in Baltimore; I got it in that "other place". The second coin I did get in Baltimore and it completes my War Nickel set in Full Steps: The third coin is one I've been seeking for a couple years. It's the right combo of grade and price. The fourth coin was bought raw and I submitted it to NGC right at the show. It'll be a couple weeks before I see it again.
kanga: That is a beautiful '77 Indian. Nice addition, it matches my 09 S exactly! Send it on over, so they can keep each other company.
I got the '77 IHC from Table 553. It's worth a look just to see what high end small cents look like. The "scratches" on the reverse of the nickel are on the coin. Since PCGS slabbed it, I assume they are file marks on the die that transferred to the coin, i.e., die adjustment because of something like a die clash. I'd have to dig it out and see if the "scratches" are ridges. They should be.
