I was wondering if anyone here knew what the relative rarity of 1965, 66 and 67 cameo halves from SMS. I remember recently someone here posted a thread where one (I think it was a 1967) was "conserved" by someone he knew, and it showed the before and after pics. How uncommon are they, and would I be able to look up completed auctions on teletrade or something for prices realized? Can someone help with info?
Hey Mike...Here's the little bit of info I found on these halves. I hope that this helps. http://www.coinfacts.com/half_dollars/kennedy_half_dollars/1965_half_dollar.htm http://www.coinfacts.com/half_dollars/kennedy_half_dollars/1966_half_dollar.htm http://www.coinfacts.com/half_dollars/kennedy_half_dollars/1967_half_dollar.htm
Don't forget the even more rare 1964 SMS Kennedy. Heritage auction. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=346&Lot_No=7926&src=pr
Indianhead: Do you have any info on the 1967 SMS Roosie? I have one: NGC MS-68 Cameo, and have no info on it. Value?
Here you go Frank, its from the same site as the others above. Unfortunately, theres not an overabundance of info on the SMS coins. http://www.coinfacts.com/dimes/roosevelt_dimes/1967_dime.htm
You're welcome. If I find any more info worthy of posting on this subject I'll post it in this thread. I cant recall that I've ever seen a cameo SMS coin of any kind, but then I've never been to a large coin show either where I imagine they would/could be found more easily.
This one was found at a local show, about 50 tables. My friends thought that I was nuts to spend $50 on it. I got it in November 2003, and have never seen another one. At the time the PCGS value was $325 (in April 2005).
Indianhead: I was searching through some SMS when I came across this 1965 set that had a Cameo Half in it. It struck me as unusual, but I remember the one from the thread here earlier that was restored. I know that lots of people collect Kennedy Halves, and so there must be some demand for the SMS cameo halves. It may be an item of relatively little notice up until now, mostly because the US clad coinage since 1965 has yielded very little interest in the last 40 years. I have decided that this may be an area that I can pick my way through without much (if any) resistance from dealers as I search their stock as well as offer themselves to me at bargain prices. As an aside, I paid $5 for the 65 SMS, I think the half has GOT to be worth more than that!!! I will take pics and post them later for all to see when I figure out how to capture the contrast of this coin best. Thanks all for your input. This is not a thread that demands hard fact, I welcome people's opinions on these coins as well.
here's a pic of the kennedy, I tried as best I could, I will try more...lol the marks are on the plyofilm, not the coin
