I picked up a few Spanish Colonial reales at the Long Beach show. One of them is 2 reales from Mexico City that was attributed as 1736/5 overdate, but to me it looks like a 1736/3, which is rarer (11-25 pieces known). Krause does not distinguish prices between the two overdates, but who can resist a theoretical cherrypick? Here it is, see if you agree with my attribution: Spanish Colonial 2 reales 1736, Mexico City Gilboy M-2-8c?, KM#84 6.68g, 26.5mm Detail of the overdate, note the 3 is repunched: In case you are wondering why I don't think the 6 is over a 5, it is because the 5 used for this year was the old style, which looks very different from a 'regular' 5. For reference, below is an old style 5 from a 1750 8 reales:
I'm not expert enough to have a strong opinion, but I definitely see why you think it is the 1763/3 variety. Very nice coin either way. Andy
Very nice coin, and great condition. I just love those. Between the looks and the history I just think they are great. Thanks for sharing
