Guaranteed if you tell your friends, relatives or casual acquaintances you're a coin collector, 99.5% of them will look at you like you have three stinkin heads. Actually, it's the same way I would look at someone who told me they collected stamps!! LoL!!

Over the years, I've often wondered how to bring up the subject in a general conversation promoting the hobby, without diminishing it at the same time. I guess that's why I can pretty much sit here and tell you, the only people that know I collect coins is you and my wife! Maybe we're all here because we (okay, I) can't talk about it with non-collectors?

I'm thinking maybe because most coin collectors are introverts?... I don't know.

Hey, the next time you're at a coin show or coin club, take a good look around at some of those people! [IMG] icon_smile_roflmao.gif

Wait a minute, I think I just answered my own question......my wife has been telling me I'm nuts for years!

This has been very therapeutic. Thanks for listening, I needed that!

    I couldn't find a "RANT OFF" switch. ;) icon_smile_roflmao.gif

Lol, you think its bad as an older gentlemen as a coin collector?
I'm told I should go to football games on fridays, chase girls, go hang out with friends, have "fun." Yet I am broken of that stereotype with this alternate form of fun that we are all acquainted with.

While other folks are "having fun", we're in our workshops building something that will last forever. We'll both have some great memories, but we'll have them in slabs and with resale value;)

I know I'm relatively "out of the norm"/nuts, searching for high-grade/under-graded pre-1933 certified CACed coins. I buy generally whatever I find that meets my criteria to acquire coins correctly technically graded.

I haven't found anyone other than the auction houses, who constantly contact me to consign, with similar interests.

My family has never understood my insanity when I could be investing in digital products that will always outperform. I'm just a "NUT" that appreciates the beauty of U.S. pre-1933 certified Gold.

Worked like a charm for me for a couple of decades ! And besides, it would make you, to the best of my knowledge, only the 2nd person to have ever done it ;)

Wait a minute, are you trying to tell me you have had that coin in your pictures for a couple of decades? ;)

Of course. But it can work to your advantage too. When someone says my dad or grandmother had a box of old coins I still got it somewhere. 99% of the time it’s foreign stuff junk silver or some circulated Morgan and peace dollars. But you never know. Especially if they do have something and you treat them fair and then they’ll tell their friends sometimes. I get a fair amount of stuff through my antique dealer friends that all know I collect and deal coins too. Looked at a 1845 seated dollar a week ago. Unfortunately fake. And have to look at a 1876-s trade and a Lafayette dollar probably tomorrow that look real in pics

I figure the fewer people who know I collect coins, the safer my collection is.

Well, most folks have something they’re less likely to let the broader community know about. Coin clubs, book clubs, whatever makes you happy. As we age we get beyond the stigmas and release a lot of baggage. I fully understand the anxious moments (e.g., returning boxes of CRH dumps), but what crazy things do the labelers/judges do? Context. Live life without regret. Don’t feel you need to justify yourself to others especially if it doesn’t adversely affect them. No apologies. We get one trip in the game of life. No do overs. If that doesn’t work, conceal your identity with a paper bag.

I feel like anyone I've told about my hobby has been very accepting. Sometimes they say it's cool or ask questions or say a relative collects. Just put it out there and don't be ashamed. I know people who collect Star Wars toys, all kinds of stuff. Coins is just one more collection.

Yes, it’s better to keep your hobby to yourself unless there is some purpose in mentioning it.

I've always liked the "weird" hobbies - but I'm also an introvert.

Tell people that you're into vintage vacuum tube amplifiers?
Tell people that you build your own stereo gear?
    Tell people you collect records?
Tell people that you modify/rebuild cars?
    Write fiction?
Still into weight lifting even though I'm (nearly) 50?
Buy ancient Roman rings or coins?
    Collect coins?

Yeah you're going to get some weird looks. Many people just watch TV, follow sports, work their jobs, and, as far as I can tell, don't do much beyond that.

    Yes, we are all crazy.

But then so are people who:
    collect Beanie Babies
    Clarinets,
    and martian alien poop.

I’m with @Maxfli. My immediate family knows I collect coins, but no one else — except you fine people. :)
