I want to buy a camera so I can post some coins . I have no idea about what is the best camera for this, I'm looking to spend around $200 is this enough . In terms of importence 1. quality photos ( at least good enough to post ) 2. Ease of use to post on this site . Any suggestions. Thanks rzage:smile:whistle::smile
I gather from your question that you are not an experienced photographer. There is every kind of answer to your question you can imagine, but most of the answers are up to your preference - price probably being one of the more important. I would strongly recommend that you read some of the recommendations and reviews at http://www.steves-digicams.com/ before you make up your mind. I would also add that the setup is probably as important as the camera in today's market
If the book ever comes out (it's has been delayed a number of times now), Mark Goodman's "Numismatic Photography" will be a great book to get. He has a web site http://coinimaging.com/ where you can get some information now. Mark has a great reputation for taking high, high quality pictures of coins.
First, read the book. Make sure the camera you choose is the right one for what you want to do. Consider MACRO capabilities, for close ups. Determine if you need an extra lens and a camera that will accept it. Seek advice from a TRUSTED source.. Good luck.
Thanks people , I didn't realise how in depth this photography stuff is . really will appreciate all the photos people post even the not so good ones , heck with the digital camera my son has , I couldn't even take an in focus picture . Thanks again . rzage
A Coolpix 995 will meet your price AND meet your requirements. EXCEPT it's a bugger to use. Look for it on eBay since it's an older model. Make sure you get the documentation. BTW that's the camera I use. Posting on site has nothing to do with the camera. That's strictly between you and your ISP OR one of the free online sites.
This answer depends on where you live. Just as with coins, guns, knives, baseball cards, there are camera shows. Try google for a list of camera shows in your area. If you live in or near other states, try them also. At a camera show you can aquire information on all types of cameras, photo tips, camera equipment, etc. And all from professionals usually. Then since in person, you can see what they are talking about. Over the years I've purchase about 50 cameras, hundreds of lenses, flash units, etc and all at camera shows for a fraction of store prices. If none available, if I were you I'd just go for the cheapest digital camera that has all the basics. For example look for a minimum of 3 megapixel quality. Threaded hole for tripod mount. lens that closes for lens protection. Don't invest in a camera that requires changing lenses unless you know what your doing. Naturally a built in flash. Micro and telephoto abilities. A removable card. Now with a removable card, be carefull. There are numerous types and some are very difficult to find or expensive. Look for a SD removable card if possible. Otherwise a compact flash card.
Some of the best pictures of coins I have seen were taken by Nikon Coolpix cameras. Almost any model is better for coins than the competition.
