I don't mean to be offensive but "almost matches exactly" and "for the most part" along with "it looked similar" are not the same. Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and other bombs. I've been a collector for many a year now and this is a worn, well circulated, poorly struck Quarter that's worth face value.
The image from the book shows doubling that demonstrates a couple of the classic tells (thickened device with traditional border lines and notches). Your specimen shows classic signs of die deterioration (devices accompanied by ripples and sweeping die wash). As noted by your fellow enthusiasts ‘similar’ is not good enough. ‘Same’ is the minimum standard. Finding and confirming markers needs to be established as well. At different die states there may be different markers, so keep die state in mind when establishing attribution.
These guys know there stuff man. Thank God they set me straight when I thought I had something and was 110% sure of it hundreds of times.....otherwise Id have a pile of coins I thought were well worth thousands lol. This sport takes a humble honest eye. I like finding details that eliminate possibilities because just about any coin in circulation has something that could "look" like something special. Finding a questionable detail on a coin is the easy part. The hard part is accepting it is just another FV coin. If we didnt "want" to find the unique, there wouldnt be many doing this and that "wanting" sure can be a powerful lobbying force in the brain!
