Does anyone have a good reference for pick numbers for world notes? Is there a website that is a good reference or someone refer a good up-to-date book? I have a bunch of world notes that all I have for pick #'s are P-NEW and I believe that they have been around long enough to have a pick number. Any help or pointers is appreciated....thanks. Smaugy.....
it depends on what years the notes are. i am currently using "standard catalog of world paper money" i have only one for now it is 1961-present. i need to pick up one of older notes. they are published by Krause publications. you can pick up the new edition or even previous editions on amazon. thats a good place to start. i picked up the 12th edition which was published in 2006 i think i got it for like $12 with shipping. a newer edition might run you $30-40. it is quite a large book. the edition i have is like 1200 pages. here is the newest edition: http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Cata...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212113186&sr=8-1 here is one for older notes: http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Cata...bs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212113186&sr=8-2
urbanchemist nailed it. I have all three of the books, and use them OFTEN!!! i just need to get the coin books for a complete set.. but lack of funds is killing that plan lol i am not sure of the info being online... But talk to De Orc... he doesnt have the books... and does a DANG good job of finding lots of info on his notes maybe he will share his secrets lol But if you can .. i highly recommend the Krause books!!!
I have 2 of the three Krause books and plan on ordering the speciality notes volume this week -- having an Amazon GC helps reduce cost. I was just wondering if there was any other source for this information. thanks....... Smaugy....
well, what i do .. is i type in the pick number i 'think' it is.. like P-31a Tiawan... or something like that. and then compare a few different results. Ron Wises currency page has thousands of images.. but alot of them are mis labled. but it is an excellent start! With so many sites that list some notes with possible pick numbers, some sites are bound to get the attribution wrong from time to time. So i use a couple or three sources if my krause books arent helping ... and then there is always cointalk
The Pick numbers are assigned by Krause for the Standard Catalog. Many new notes appear in the Journal of the International Bank Note Society which comes out quarterly. They are usually listed in the Journal by Pick number before the new catalog is printed by Krause. Tha latest edition of the Modern Issues (1961-present) comes with a CD. I have not seen the information on the CD because I have not purchased the book. I saw it at a show in Iola, WI (where Krause is headquartered) a few weeks ago. I do not collect modern notes so I only update my Volume III every couple years. Krause intends to move the information to a website that would be available on a paid subscription basis but that may take a few years yet.
Just a caution on the Krause catalogues, others and myself have noted numerous errors, notes that were not listed, varieties not listed etc. I collected Scottish banknotes until about 5 years ago, the catalogues were rife with errors, omissions etc.
Scottishmoney is correct that the Krause catalogs have errors and omissions in the listings. There is only one person who works on the catalog now. He also works on other Krause publications so he does not devote all his efforts to the paper money catalog. Until something comes along to replace it, it is the only general survey of world notes around.
exactly. I have also noted several errors in the books. This is my first edition, so i have nothign to compare to about missing info .. but when the book stells you a note is signature 13 for example and tells you to check the chart for the name that belongs to #13 ... and there is no chart ... well i count that as an omission lol The books are not perfect, and in the interest of making money, Krause 'may' not devout the time or resources they should to keeping them updated and accurate - but the are still the best resource out there - which quite possibly is why Krause can get away with doing what they do
