I had this lying around, Just looking for some input and a rough grade. I know it has some problems. Harry
Ignoring the "problems", I'd say Fine. But I'm just doing this for practice - don't take my word on this.
I'd say VF-20/25. Don't have an Overton handy, What do you guys think about O-105/105-A. R-3... ? Ben
Very nice coin, I'd like to have a few of them lying around. Fine sounds about right to me, but I don't know really how to grade these, lol. :thumb: Phoenix
Yes it is an O-105. I dont have the diags for the a... I am a little tougher on the grade than Ben is. the marks on the reverse.. I say its a Strong Fine
I agree with Ben - I would say VF25. I will have to check my book when I get home for the attribution. To me the small scratches do not distract from the coin. Nice coin to have lying around.
Check this link out, it lists some examples of other O-105s, however there are no O-105As listed. The essential differnce between the two (simply a later worn die state) are the stars on the right are FLAT. http://coinzip.proboards79.com/index.cgi?board=1822b&action=display&thread=1599
Comparing based off pictures - are the inside right bases of the A's mostly missing? Looking at pictures only of the 112 and 105. Pictures only I am leaning towards O-105 I can't see enought to go with the 112. Need my book.
You might have something there, the inside (rt) seriff of the As seems to be missing. Alas I'm (Overton-less) again, LOL...
Okay - now I can say a 112. Trying to compare pictures was too hard. On the 112 the "I" is centered under the left side of "T". The "5" is higher than the "0" in "50". Right feet of A's missing. And center dot between crossbars 4 and 5. So it is a 112 in my opinion. Good find vavet!
Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794-1836 by Al C. Overton is the standard reference work for Capped Bust Halves. Since Overton identified the die varieties for the series, collectors have honored his work by referencing the various die varieties by "Overton Number."
As I start to understand grading and going through the book, I would say at least VF20. It may be more like VF30, as the reverse is close to an XF state. But the obverse fits the VF20 description to a tee, so conservatively speaking, you have to grade it VF20... BTW, that is a beautiful coin , very nice find
