My thought is the coin was struck and did not eject, rotated and was struck again. I see no signs of a vise job as nothing appears backwards. The angles of both sides seem to match in degrees and proper rotation. Nice find. Where did you come across this?
I vote fake as inconsistencies in the images, things that should have been present if true are missing. IMO, Jim
I wouldn't feel comfortable declaring this a double strike in collar. I did notice that the obverse rotation is greater than the reverse. It's possible that the anvil die rotated a bit, but I'm not sure it would rotate that much between two strikes. I'd also expect to see more overlap of the two strikes on the devices on both sides and a not so clear image of the second strike. Having said that, I haven't seen many of these types of coins. http://lincolncentsonline.com/error3.html
I haven't a clue but hope someone can post a definitive answer to help educate us. My first impression is that it is a fake, but only because it's way too cool. LOL What say you @Fred Weinberg?
It appears to have more rotation on the obv than the rev IMO. That would rule out a rotated in collar double strike. I also agree with @desertgem that the visible areas on the first strike may not be consistent with a double strike. @JCro57 previously posted a verified fake of an early 60s Lincoln double strike. I wonder if this could be from the same source. Will read additional comments with interest, but I believe it's a fake
I'm leaning toward real. Jim, wouldn't it make sense that a second strike would be contacting the (already raised) devices on the coin before making contact with the fields. Wouldn't this cause other incuse areas of the dies to be weakly struck or not struck at all? Chris
It looks real to me, as ignorant as I am of errors. Where's Fred and Paddy and Obie Wan when we need them? Steve
It’s about 30 degrees rotated on the obverse and 10 degrees rotated on the reverse. I would think with just one additional strike the rotation would be the same on both sides. Reed
Not my coin. Someone sent me the pictures and asked. He said it was in a collection of over 500 error coins. All raw, and this one stood out as the most impressive. Most of the coins are off center errors. Most are Lincoln's.
I don't think this coin has anything to do with double struck in the collar . That usually the outside devices . With that said fake ....
