I finally broke down and got my first loupe. I didn't need a real fancy one, I just needed one that was better than 2x magnification, lol. Anyone have any experience with this loupe? I got the 14X, cost me a total of $11 with the shipping. Now I can hunt for those RPM's, and DD's. Thought I'd share, I'm done now. :mouth: Phoenix
I have used their 10x for some time now. Love it....but there is one thing I don't like. The glass is held in by a small piece of metal that screws in the one side...that comes lose and falls out along with the glass piece. A buddie of mine has a 20x I think, and it is really nice! Speedy
Same one I have. It serves its purpose but I personally can't stand looking at coins through it. I'd rather have one of those stereo microscopes if I was looking at a large amount of coins.
Yours must be older than mine. I have a 10x and there is not a screw on it or at least not that I can find. I wouldn't mind a 20x to take to the store. As it is Phoenix - get a digital blue microscope to look for RPM's. I find it saves a lot of eye strain.
Oh! To have the eyes again where I would not need a loupe. I have trouble reading the dates on dirty or splotchy Lincolns
I've got the same one as you Phoenix but mine is a 10X. I find that this magnification is enough for me. This is the only way I can read the dates on cents, nickels, half dimes and dimes. I also bought one of those Digital Blue QX5 microscopes. I found that it was a waste of my money. Wasnt compatible with Windows Vista.
I believe that they have issued a patch for that now. A guy on WINS had big problems but last I heard he was really likeing it now. Speedy
I won't have to worry about vista until this PC craps out - which I hope is in 3 to 4 years. I really like my scope - makes it really easy on the eyes at times.
Phoenix, Congrats on the loupe purchase! Now if you really want to get serious about RPM and Doubled Die searching and can't afford a Digital Blue, then you should get you a nice double lens loupe with two lens that is 5x + 5+ = 10x and at least a 17x or 20x loupe or both. There are some triple lens loupes with differnet powers for each lens which create different magnification powers depending on which two you combine together. Frank
Why worry about it then? At my business we are still installing XP for the clients who don't want to change. Speedy
I figure by the time the current PC craps out they will not have XP available, everything will have vista on it. Just like when I got XP this time.
A 14X loupe is good for RPMs and DDs. For that purpose I use a 10X and a 20X. For general use and grading I would recommend using a 6X or 7X. Anything higher than that will amplify minor imperfections making a coin appear worse than it really is (from a grading perspective).
Phoenix , thanks for the heads up , I'm gonna order it right now , I'm still using a 5x printers lens , good for grading or reading dates , thats all, better then nothing I guess , but when I get this loupe , kool . rzage
OHH Phoenix getting into the varieties now! Great! I haven't used that loupe but it looks sturdy and long-lasting.
Yeah, actually been into them (more wanting to get into them) till finally I just decided to jump in. Now to find the big ones. Phoenix
