Hello coinaholics . I'm hopeful that one of you knows off the top of your head what coin this could possibly be. It's a chunky silver coin which was found by a metal detector. Any insight would be greatly appreciated !
Congrats on the find - it looks interesting. I don’t think it is a coin. It does look to me like a like a winged victory on a globe presenting a wreath or branches - branch or palm frond on left. size, weight location/region where found, and photo of the whole ring could all help add clues. Here is the coin it reminds me of most.
Bingo ! , Found in the UK. She's facing the other way , but I've seen it on other examples of other coins. The design is spot on. I wonder if there are other issues where she's facing the other way?
It looks like a serrated Roman Republican-era denarius. There aren't many RR denarii with serrated edges, so someone who specializes in RR coins should be able to ID it pretty quickly if it is an actual coin.
I did a quick AC search and found this: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4301714 It's not serrated, but the reverse looks similar. Victory is standing on the prow of a ship on the coin linked to, but perhaps that was remove when the coin was set in the ring?
This form of victory comes from the denarii of Octavian with M. Pinarius Scarpus like this. Victory isn't quite right here, in particular the skirt is not quite the full size and while it may just be the photos it overall has a cast appearance. I suspect what's in the ring was never a real coin at all and is instead a possibly uniface jeweler's replica of the denarius that's been worked on a bit to make the piece and the design better fit within the ring.
