Have a look at this Standing Liberty Quarter. To the left (our left) of her right knee, you'll see a small incused rectangle with a raised dot at its center. I always thought that it was PMD - perhaps something done with a punch tool of some sort? Here's the photo. About 2 months ago, I was surprised when I saw another SLQ (on ebay) with an almost identical anomaly, but it was only half visible. In other words, it looked like half of the incused rectangle was hidden behind her knee. I thought I had saved that image to post here when I (finally) get the chance but tonight I couldn't find it. However, it didn't take long after scanning ebay this evening to find similar conditions on other SLQs. Here are two examples, although not as pronounced. I wish I could find the other photo that I thought I'd saved. So is this something that happened during the minting process and if so, I would like to learn what happened? This got me curious. And, again, pardon me if I've drudged up a common topic for several of the experts here. For me, it's new. Thanks in advance.
That is a die clash. It's quoted as a marker for the 1918/17-S overdate, but if it's this common, I wonder how reliable it is...
@-jeffB - Admittedly, I had to look up what a die clash is. Now that (I think) I know what it is, I have more questions. Strictly from a Layman's viewpoint, then wouldn't the anomaly created by a die clash relate somehow to the design on one of the faces of the dies? But I don't see any rectangle with a dot in it, on the reverse design of this coin. Can you help me to reconcile that? Thanks again.

Happy to help. It's not something I already knew, but I remembered reading about that diagnostic mark on the 18/17 overdate, remembered that it was a clash, and thought of the magic keyword for a Google search: Standing Liberty quarter die clash overlay. And that's how you catch the fish.

Yep, can't fish if you don't know how to set up a lure. We all have to start somewhere. And asking here certainly does count as "resourceful"!
Great analogy and there is so much more to know than that.. What type of lure and bait, water temperature, sunny and overcast sky, location, low, high, outgoing and incoming tides, low, medium and fast action rods.. Same with error and variety attribution.. You need to know all the different issues and how they occur. Learn the minting proccess. Don't assume anything!
There is corollary to that analogy which is particularly applicable to CoinTalk (not anyone in this thread though )... There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.
