Crazy as it sounds, I worked from middle of June till the 16th straight, no rain outs. Now, I am off work second day due to 48 hr. deluge (maybe should call Noah) I got 2 more coins from Roma e-auction. Here is the first.... Also hit the 900 mark in my collection. My first coin from Caria/ Satrap under Persian authority. AV 1/10 Daric ND / struck Halikarnassus Mint circa 341-38BC Satraps of Karia Pixodaros 341-338BC First time I have seen this coin in any auction....must be rare? Note/ really botched strike/ little gold nodule on edge/ mint employee should be sacked....
Delectable little thing! Congrats on obtaining it...and on reaching 900 gold coins. Maybe it is a good time for me to purchase my first!
LOL, purdy easy! Just pull the trigger! @panzerman ... great little AV... what is the weight and mm? At 1/8 Daric... what, around little over 1g? (The gold blob / nodule is a BONUS! - better than a divot! )
I would so love to have the $$$$ to do so with upcoming Numismatica Genevensis "Royal Collection" auction....the trigger is stuck and my fingers are broken that's life. John
LOL, yeah, I understand. Hey, idea: opening ante for LRB’s (Late Roman Bronzes) are pretty low... you can get several good ones under $20 ea. Some lower... But, you did not hear that from me... I am a Roman Republic and their adversaries guy... all BCE time period. Good luck! We all we be glad to help you out with any advice, information, etc. Break the ice, get a couple cool coins, and have fun. You may get hooked, and Join The Dark Side.
i've already GONE to the dark side!! coin-wise, that is! and thank you for the offer of help and advice. i am looking at that auction house @panzerman mentioned above. Lots of stuff there.
..ahaha...i hear ya...my guns are purdy small ...so i don't shoot too big of bullets..and some of these folks are using cannons..
@AncientJoe :if something is strange, it is the casting sprue (?!) or whatever it is and the excess metal which I am not sure if it is due to a die break or it's a repair. Indeed it is worth to authenticate
I wrote to Roma before auction end date. They stated that they had an expert look at the coin/ among others. That little nodule of molten gold was a minting error when coin was struck back in 341BC. Actually, NGC/ PGGS have a bad track record in authenticating coins in past. I noted some Medieval India "Fish" AV Fanams in slabs/ even some "Elephant" AV Fanams from Mysore John
I would run the coin past David Vagi with NGC. He is very knowledgeable with ancients. I'm sure he could end the debate.
Totally random question, but how do you store/handle/display a coin that tiny? That's smaller than a kernel of corn!
