Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to add a few draped bust coins to my collection. Just recently, I picked up an 1805 dime. Now I have an 1807 quarter, 1806 half dollar, and 1805 dime. I probably won't be able to add a draped bust half dime or dollar any time soon, but I'm happy with the collection. I paid right around $300 for all three coins, so let me know what you think. Thanks!
I am sorry, but you pictures are too small to make any comments. I would be concerned about getting these three coins for "around $300." That is way too low, even for pieces in Good. The first two look like they are in Fair. The last one looks to be better. Please bear in mind that the Chinese have greatly added to the counterfeit population of coins like this.
Thanks for your response. Sorry for the small pictures. Here are a few that capture the coin a bit better.
I love draped bust coins but - given the price of the VF or better ones - it's a hard series to collect on my budget. So I bid a lot, lose a lot. And hope! I still kick myself for selling my 1803 Draped Bust cent that I would rate as Fine. This was back in the days when I got Morgan crazy and sold off my collection to finance that.
I still can’t get the pics to load so I can see them. Try loading them as full image not thumbnails from what I can see look well worn but ok. But I can’t tell anything from the pics. I love these coins too
I love the Draped Bust design too. Back in the early 1970s I purchased an 1805 dime in high grade, now in an AU-58 holder. That got me hooked. I have collected those coins by type and for the half dimes and dollars, by date. My advice would be to spend more money on one coin than spreading out your funds on low grade pieces. When I was collecting these pieces, I used only buy one or two coins a year. That takes discipline, but I’m glad I did that way. At the risk have having people claim that I am trying to upstage the opening posts, here is that 1805 dime, which now my avatar her. Coins like this are “eye candy” for me.
You can get a pretty nice Draped Bust half cent in your price range. I like these as well. I consider them a family of obverses, since the engraving on each denomination is different.
A nice group of coins starting your collection at a price that seems very reasonable. You will have no trouble upgrading if you choose to and getting a decent trade-in for your current ones. Just my opinion, of course. Demand for early U.S. in any condition is getting nothing but stronger. Keep on having fun!
The Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle Half Dollar is the most common silver type coin from this era. Very low grade examples are actually scarce because most them sat in banks as backing for the paper money those institutions issued. At one time the Draped Bust large cents were frequently available at the small shows, but die variety collectors have snapped a lot of them up for their collections. The 1804 and 1806 half cents are the most common dates for that denomination.
They may have had rough lives, but they’re not a bad start to a Draped Bust collection. Something neat about the 1807 quarter is it has the reverse die with the bisecting die crack that runs from the T in UNITED to the O in OF. Somehow the die didn’t break in half!
Congrats on the draped busts! My favorite U.S coin types. Here is my 1797 dollar, purchased last year. Currently working on a set of these from 1795 to 1803....not the best grade...but I like her!
Is my favorite coin design actually. I have quite a few. The only denominations I don’t have is half dime and quarter as I’ve bought and sold them and haven’t found the right one I’ve never actually owned a draped bust half dime
WOW! Great coin! My 1796 is only a Fine-15 and not nearly as nice as that. The 1797 is reputed to be tougher than the 1796 in the no problem grades.
Thank you. Yes, it was hard finding a nice 1797. Many look very rough and, imho, dont score high on the eye appeal factor. So, i knew once i saw this one....i'd better move. I'd love to see your 1796....if you want to show her off!
Okay, here is my 1796 half dollar in Fine-15. I had hoped to get a VF, but that didn't work out the way I had hoped. This is the lowest grade coin in my type set.
That's a very nice, original looking 1796....i would'nt worry much about grade..thats a beautiful coin, imo. And a very tough find!
True, with 1804 being noticeably more common than any other date. Really all of the dates except 1802 are fairly common by half cent standards.
