looking at some of my proof sets tonight.......Does anyone know why the 2001 proof set (10 coin) is worth (and costs) so much more compared to other proof sets? Is it the mintage amounts or just supply and demand?

    Thanks

I think it has something to do with the Sacajawea dollar. That particular year is quite expensive.

While we are on the subject of 2001 Proof sets, I have a similar question on the 2001 5-quarter Proof set. Why is it worth more (relatively) than others?

    Another great question.
    2001 (5 coin Qtrs.) Mintage 799,800
    2002 (5 coin Qtrs.) 764,400
    2000 (5 coin Qtrs.) 990,700

Makes no sense due to mintage figures.

I have been buying up all the 2000 and 2003 silver proof sets I can get at the coin shows. These two are the lowest priced of 1999 to 2003 of sets where there were no 5 quarter silver sets made. In 2004 the mint started making the 5 quarter silver sets which added to the totals by about 500,000 a year. 1999,2001, very high price and 2002 is not cheap.
but for some reason 2000 been paying around 18.00 to 19.00 and 2003 around 21.00 ( bid or lower )

I think the reason for the 2001 high price is related to the New York Quarter...

2001, New York... and 11 Sept.

In a nutshell, the 2001 sets cost more because the coin dealers got caught with their pants down that year - they didn't buy them.

I cannot find prices for this coin, At the coin auction this week, I won the auction for $13. It's a beautiful coin - I hope I did OK.

You did awesome! According to PCGS, that coin is worth, in that condition, $60!!!

Everyone and their uncle bought doubles of the sets in 2000 because they thought they would be worth big money like in 1999, but instead they got burned so not many people bought extras in 2001 the following year.

The 2001 silver proof sets are coming down in value. I bought my first two for $68/ea. in 2008 and just bought another in May for $50. It still is worth far less than the 1999 but that one is dropping in value too. I think that the hype is going away with time.

  14. I agree and have also noticed that the price for these sets is coming down, as is the price of the proof Sac dollar for that year. TC

TC, the price for the Proof Sac is not coming down, it crashed a while ago. I was selling singles on eBay and couldn't sell them at $35, a far cry from the $100 they got a year or so ago.
