Almost 30 years ago when I was living in Colorado, I got to see a traveling exhibition of items from the wreck of the Atocha. One of the ingots was on display by the opening to the jewelry display. It was the size of a large loaf of bread and visitors were allowed to try and pick it up.

Mostly pieces of 8 for sale, along with gold and necklaces. But I was a broke 20-something so buying anything was impossible. I had to eat that week!

 

1857-S $20 Liberty: Does anybody know what the price for this particular Double Eagle has done in the decade-plus since the SS Central America pieces hit the market ?

I am sure that the premium to the underlying gold content has gone down, I'm more interested in the absolute price for this coin -- or other SS Central American pieces you may have tracked over the years.

 

No way, unless about 20,000 are found in MS-65 and higher.

 

Over 1000 in 65 according to pcgs. That number seems low actually as how many were found

 

I believe the price has moved UP for the 1857-S's....though less so for the SSCA's.

This article is dated, but interesting. I believe the prices SSCA 1857-S's has moved UP in general, not sure about non-SSCA.

Now I see 1857-S SSCA's going for under $4,000 in AU-58 quality, even with some stupid gold dust included.

These coins should be...they are more MS examples known for 1857-S then any other Liberty Head Double Eagle.
MS-66= 8K
MS-65=5K
MS-64=4K
MS-63=3K
MS-62=2K

 

Those are recent prices for regular (non-SSCA) 1857-S, right ?

I think SSCA's are about 2x as high, maybe a bit more, than non-SSCA's, except in the higher MS's where you simply can't find many non-SSCA's in that grade.
