I just scored the Athenian Owl pictured below at Roma E-Sale 62, for $705.08, including the buyers premium . Photo courtesy of Roma Numismatics Limited. Athens, Circa 454-404 BC, AR Tetradrachm: 17.22 gm, 25 mm, 3 h. The obverse has a beautiful head of Athena, & the only distraction on the reverse is a small die-break on the owl's left eye.
A fantastic example, congrats. Attica, Athens (353 - 294 B.C) AR Tetradrachm O: Helmeted head of Athena right R: AΘE Owl standing right, head facing, olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square. 16.59g 21 mm Kroll -; HGC 4, 1599 Ex. Numismatik-Naumann, Auction 52, Lot 126
Thanks TIF, I agree. I was on the CNG website earlier & spotted the Owl pictured below that recently sold on CNG Coin Shop for $1,950.00 ! I think the Owl I just scored is superior to this one that has corrosion behind Athena's head & is struck on a smaller planchet. Photo courtesy of CNG.
Nice coin. But I don't think comparing prices to a fixed price list makes much sense. A female dealer bought a couple of these in a previous roma esale and is now selling them for 4-5 times the hammer. I am sure we will soon see the 2 ones which just hammered 700-750 pounds in her shop as well
That’s a magnificent coin! I’m really liking the shape of it. You don’t often see such detail in the helmet crest or the decorations around Athena’s neck..
