Late birthday present - just arrived today. Definitely better late than never. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Go ahead and guess the grade...opinions and comments are welcome. BTW, it's graded by NGC. Additional images:
I like this toning much more than the other coin you posted today, that is a nice coin, but the eagles breast feathers are either worn, which would warrant an Au-58, or it is just a weak strike and I'd go with a Ms-62 if thats the case.
I'd say a weak strike. Although, there does seem to be something goofy going on below the cotton bols on the obverse. Maybe just the pics. Guy~
99 o are common for having a weak strike. I would say NGC MS 65. Very attractive color as well. I like it.
I'd say MS-63-64 if it is a weak strike & not wear , cheeks & fields free of bag marks , might go 65 if it has the luster, & if strike is normal for the year . Pretty coin . RZAGE
I'm going to have to jump in with a 64. The fields are clean, but I am having trouble with what looks like a rub in the toning on the cheek-throat area, its known as a weak struck year.
Wow, the damage on the obverse did not harm the grade? EDIT: I an confused. At MS-66, doesn't it have to have breast feathers? You can barely see them!
It's a O mint coin, well known for weak strikes Ryan. They make allowances for that when grading. Now as for what you are calling damage on the obverse - it is where the toning has been scraped off by something and it is typically not counted as a distracting point by the TPG's when grading. However, I personally agree with your thinking and think that it should count against the grade. Not because of the toning, but because the toning has been scraped off. That much seems obvious. I can understand not deducting points for toning that is flaking off on its own. But when it has been scraped off as this is, that I find very distracting and think points should be deducted.
The untoned area on the cheek is not because of the toning being scraped off or flaking off, it's actually an old old fingerprint that must have kept that particular area from toning. I don't mind it too much though as the coin really is quite attractive in hand.
Well, if I personally had that coin, I would grade it AU-50 at the very highest because of the damage. (I was going to go XF-40, but I did not know about the weak strike thingy)
