Not my series but based off of the PCGS photograde, I would say it is possibly closer to a G4-6 and probably a details coin.
I say G6. Minor surface issues, but not awful, and market-acceptable for the grade, IMHO. No such thing as a "G8". An 8 on the Sheldon scale is VG. No such thing as an "O" mintmark (or any mintmark, for that matter), on any pre-1838 US coins.
I'd say it's pretty close to VG and wouldn't quibble if someone called it that. I merely said G6 to be conservative.
Unbelievable.... coins are not graded on one word being readable or not! I give it a G-04 details environmental damage. LM-3 obv.1 rev.M that makes it an R-4
What was your grade Mike? You have to remember that grading is not independent of age, you have to grade an old coin the same as a modern. There’s more to it when it comes to older coins because you have to consider typical strikes of the year and series along with how die deterioration may have effected the potential quality of the strike. You really need to know the series to accurately grade and even then it’s just an opinion.
