The Ancient Sassanian (the one in my avatar, and a bunch of other threads I made) On Forvm they said it was just a $10 junk box coin, but on here I was told I got a fair deal. So, did i do okay, or is it really a Junk Box coin? P.S.: I know these threads are really getting anoying about this same coin, but I really want to know. EDIT: I decided to post a pic of it, just so you guys know what coin I'm on about.
I still think you did okay. Even if it were a 'junk box coin', that's nothing to be ashamed of! You can get some nice coins from junk boxes. Trust me!
Delineate betwixt guys that regularly buy $1000 ancient coins telling you that your $10 purchase was a junk coin, and what satisfies you and them. The piece is a nice and historical purchase and I am sure it should give you pleasure, probably more bang for the buck than if you had let out $1K on the coin.
I have to agree with all that has been said above, now ask yourself what constitutes a good deal for you? For me it is purchasing a coin or note at a price that I am happy with, regardless of what others might think :smile
me too but usually whats others think goes because they outbid me i am also depressed about the brunei 10000$ polymer note tot hink i will be forced to buy that eventually
Yeah, I just got some nasty responses from some FORVM folks when I asked about the value of a Roman coin I recently acquired. Seems like they're a little snobby over there. But anyway, for what you paid, I say you got a good deal. And if you're happy with it, that's all that matters.
why dont we create a new thread in here and call it super forvm that will be our response to rude people
There is no reason for confusion. You got an answer on FORVM from someone that is very knowledgeable about Sasanian coinage, and he only told you what he would pay or expect to pay. This level of expertise only comes from years of collecting. If you did not know, Tom (the person that gave you the answer) has a very good website on coins of Asia. http://www.grifterrec.com/coins/coins.html
I am a member there, and that is not really true! In Pat's defense, her response was not nasty, either. It is true that she did not answer your question, but she was trying to make a point, which you did not want to hear. You have to remember, that some people take ancient numismatics very seriously, and it is a bit more than a hobby for them. Pat is a long time professor of art history, and while she does tend to lecture a bit, she is a very nice person and is quite helpful. Anyway, bashing other Forum's and its members is not very nice-- especially as many peope belong to multiple forums!
how much did you buy it for? anyways nice coin i found a simmilar one on coin archives http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=58686&AucID=62&Lot=261
Here is a question to you: "Does your partner look attractive to you or not? How much value would you place on your partner" I reckon everyone's answer to that is different. Same with coins, there are people who don't care about bullion coins and vice versa for other coins.
My gosh if I stressed about if I got a stellar deal or not on every purchase I made I would have left collecting long ago. The only regret I would have is if I unknowningly bought a forgery, and that is why I buy from reputable dealers in the event I do not trust myself to discern a fake, and the price is high enough to make that a concern. I think you should study your coin more, read about the series, read about Sassanian history, and buy another. If you are in any doubt about from where to buy them, ask here.
Just keeping things in perspective. Regardless of the price of the coin- think of the price of a meal in a nice restaurant, or two movie tickets plus popcorn and drinks, or 10 gallons of gas, etc.... For about the same amount of money you've got a beautiful coin thats nearly 1500 years old!!! Unless you sell it you will have the coin to enjoy for a long time. All of those other things would be gone and forgotten very quickly. Andy
It's not that I didn't want to hear it, it's just that it was inane. I am quite aware that there is a difference between "value" and "monetary value," and it was presumptuous of her to assume I was some slack-jawed collector looking to make a quick buck after having my coin identified. My intention wasn't to bash. Pat came off as snobby IMO, and it only takes the off-putting comments of a few to ruin someone's impression of a board. I'm sure there are plenty cordial users on FORVM (including you), however, I personally don't plan on asking any more questions there after being treated like a 10-year-old who has yet to learn the difference between qualitative and quantitative value.
I have found many people there to be almost intolerable...but there are nice people at forum all the same...some just have a very very high opinion regarding their own knowledge and importance and it shows when they post. You get such people everywhere, forum does not stand alone with its collection of self important know it alls . One must remember that on Forum, it is not a free exchange of ideas there...it is an extension of the owners coin shop and as such HE dictates who can say what when and he heavily censors what is posted there if he does not agree with something that is said. That being said, there are a few guys there that I would call true experts that can be of help...and those few guys I speak of are nice guys that never fail to lend a hand if they can.
I wonder what they think of you? I am going to link to this post on FORVM, since I believe it is not right to continue this without allowing the intolerable snobs to read this stuff! If true, what might I think of this board now?
