My son was just given this coin as part of a small collection from a family friend. We'd love to know thoughts on grade. Photograde is pretty useless in my opinion on these half dimes. The liberty and shield are great, the gown has nice detail and the face and hair are decent. Not sure how much wear around the perimeter matters of if the coin would register as damaged because of a scratch through the leg. Any input is appreciated!

VF Seems to have nice detail. Unfortunately, it's damaged and might have corrosion. Still a nice coin!

I'm 100% with Islander. Nice VF but damaged.

As a collector of half dimes first let me say you have been given a better date coin.
The 1840 O Type 'll obverse was used on the majority of the 1840 h-10's struck at the New Orleans and Philly. The New Orleans mintage was 695,000 they used 7 obv.. Dies and 8 reverse dies to strike the total mintage.....your specimen has an medium O mint mark. For 1840 there were 3 mm sizes used sm, med, lg, O's..
This can be determined by size as well the O shape. I believe your coin to be an V-2 * confirmed * by markers..
Your coin shows fine details, the wear isn't as bad as the strached surfaces, that also shows signs of eviromental damage.
Adding up the plus's and the minus your coin is worth about $50 , but again a better date to build on.....if I spotted this coin at a show it would be purchased within reason of price.
This is an O mint mark low mintage, survival rate, condition....is why...I buy as many as I find because you could attend 10 shows with 100 tables at each show....and not find 1 1840 seated half dime.

  8. Too bad for the scratch. Otherwise, I like the color. I have a good start on a seated dime set in raw VF +/- with the same look. A couple with similar scratches. It’s enjoyable

VF sharpness, but it has toning that reached the environmental damage stage. Whatever you do, don't try to clean it. That will only make it worse.

Not my coin cherry picked the rpd. 001.

  13. @Paddy54 I did not know of the ‘58 RPD. I really need to grab a copy of the Flynn book.
