I have come to the conclusion! If it’s not in the red book, don’t bother!

Basically. Errors/Varieties/etc are worth money because they are RARE. These are not easy things to find while CRH'ing. Does it happen? Yeah, every blue moon. But you will have to search many many many many many coins in order to find that needle in a pile of needles.

I’ll tell you though, OP..... While it is fact that we see dozens of common damaged coins posted here daily by hopeful roll searchers.... I have in fact seen two very strong doubled 1972 cents posted here by folks simply wondering why they look odd. I am not a roll searcher myself, heck my old eyes can’t half see anymore. But I am here to tell you that there are still needles out there in those haystacks.

I’ve found some really nice coins in my CRHing but I’ve had to go through a whole lot of coins to get there. If I were to add everything up, I would hazard a guess that I am nearing 1,000 boxes of cents searched ($25,000).

If the only reason you've joined this hobby is to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, then I suggest that you get out now. I can't say that you are wasting your time, but you certainly are wasting ours.

Come on Chris, play nice. When I visit coin shows, I always hope to find that rare old valuable coin in a dealer’s junk bin... should I get out as well?

I have found 1 score and none of them really worth alot of money, but it was exciting to find them.
I found a bunch of Indian Head Cents in one roll I'm sure it will never happen again.
I gave up on finding the big score and I stop watching YouTube video's about the big one's.
I still look though my change and occasionally at the convenience store I asked the girls if they've had any rolls brought in by individuals.

I don't know. Do you go to coin shows to CRH? Do you expect those dealers to sell you rolls at face value just like someone who walks into a bank?

To put into context for those who think they will “strike it rich in pocket change” overnight, that’s 2,500,000 coins. If it took you four seconds to obtain, examine and return each coin, which is optimistically fast, you’d have put in ten million seconds.

Ten million seconds amounts to over 2500 hours of effort . . . Much more than working a full job time for one year. That isn’t exactly overnight. Working hard at a full-time job offers far better odds than the unrealistic hopes instilled by the flashin-in-the-pan strike it rich books flying off the shelves of the book stores.

Frankly, the only group benefitting from this trend that is laughing all the way to the bank is the booksellers.

I had a book that listed a few hundred Lincoln Cent doubled dies. Many of them were so minor that it took a 10X or even a microscope to see them. These pieces interest specialists, but they have a very limited market. In other words the real thing often has a limited value.

A great many pieces that are shown here are not even doubled dies. They are damaged coins.

Yep! That's why I want to gag and puke every time someone discovers a new doubled die Lincoln in a circulated roll.

I was looking at a 1944-D LWC a few min. ago...I found matches to doubling on the date but could not confirm the die markers. Circulation wear had obliterated them, an F12 I had picked up in the mid ‘70s. At 30 years of age it was already mostly expended.

My point is: there is minor doubling to be found across all denominations. Most of us will never find those key items everyone desires, but finding a minor variety fuels the hobby. CRH has its place. Finding a $5 minor ddo/ddr in a cent means 500 times FV. And...the hunt is fun.

But, like most things, best not to go overboard on it. A quick look with a 10x is usually sufficient, I use my microscope for die marker confirmation...Spark

Some people do get lucky, but that's similar to saying that some people get lucky with the lottery. A very few people will find treasures and the vast majority of people will come up empty-handed. But those few lucky ones keep the other people going despite the odds. It's true that if you don't search you won't find, but if you don't search you also won't end up as one of the many people who find next to nothing after countless hours of searching. The odds greatly favor that fate.

In fact, playing the lottery probably takes far less time than coin roll searching, especially given those numbers above, and potentially has a much bigger payoff. If you're in it for the money, I'd say play the lottery instead and enjoy your free time.

There is always the tiny hope that from a getrichfast CRH, there will emerge a true collector, one who does it more for the thrill than for the dollars, who may gravitate to collecting series in ancients, medieval , or modern coins ( except the mint annual crap) as it exercises the brain rather than destroys one's eyesight and hope as does CRH.
