My apologies for the crummy photo. I blew this up from a photo I took for insurance. This is one of the coins that resides in my SDB and I haven't laid eyes on it in years. I bought this coin many years ago. I have seen in passing discussions about some desirability being placed on old style holders here on CT. Does this old holder add any interest to this St. Gauden's?

The old PCGS slabs (rattlers) are known to be under-graded, as the standards were more strict then. Your coin may upgrade now. Put up better pics and let us help you decide if it's worthy of an upgrade or not. If you want.

I like the older holder and would keep it in there. There seems to be alot more collectors placing a monetary value on the slab than there were say 10 years ago. To me, the slabs keep getting uglier and uglier. Maybe that is one of the reasons people prefer the simpler old style slabs. I could also be that there are just alot less coins in older slabs now. There are other reasons I am sure too.

I prefer the same coin in an old style NGC fatty or PCGS doily over the newer slabs. Some still get cracked out playing the upgrade game, as a point higher more than offsets the loss of the older holder value on some coin series.

Some people: Ignore the slab, 100% coin only thing that matters. Some others 100% slab, coins doesn't matter (yes, these people do exist, they collect slabs, not coins). I tend to be a mix of the two, as are most people. 90% is the coin, 10% is the slab.

Now, there seems to me many more collectors thinking along the same lines as me.

I know my coin is way more valuable due to the slab than the coin itself, just one example:

I have been getting the itch to see what I tucked away in that old box years ago. I may go set those old coins back free so I can enjoy them. I didn't have a safe worth speaking of back when I rented that box. It's a shame I haven't laid eyes on them in years.

This is me. I can stir up quite a passion for a coin in short order. I never paid much attention at all to the slabs they reside in. I just happened to bump into this old insurance photo and the old slab caught my attention. Can you date these things from the PCGS number?

Not exactly, just like any generation of holders a percentage of them are. The majority stay the same and some would even downgrade.

I don't use the TPGS's at all, so my info is second hand, but the standards changing, and incorporating market grading is well documented/arguable.
So... i don't think we should go there.

First, it's a nice looking St. Gaudins $20. I'd keep it in its present holder. Unless you think it could jump at least two grades, it would not be worth having it regraded. There is little price difference in MS63 and MS64 1908 No Mottos. Enjoy it the way it is.

Oh absolutely. I have no interest at all in cracking and submitting. I just bumped into the photo and wondered about the old holder. I rather like the simplicity of the old holder myself.

No argument....and GD and others have made very persuasive arguments for the TPGs flaws and warts including market vs. absolute grading....still....they are a HUGE if not THE DOMINANT influence in our hobby for most coins, and to ignore them is impossible.

And that’s the problem. As you said you don’t use the TPGs at all and that “info” is over hyped on forums.

Where else are they to be discussed at than coin forums. I have seen my share of, "IMO", coins that have been both under, and over graded.
Perhaps a new thread, with a poll asking the question "Have grading standards changed over time" would give some insight into this. This is not this threads topic.

Randy, leaving it slabbed is fine. Seems to me, a little visit to the bank is long overdue.

Oh, Randy, Randy, Randy,...I'm gonna cut you some slack here because,

….obviously, this pic was not originally intended for CT. :(

However, as I am wont to do with newbies :D, I must admonish you for teasing us with, not only a sub-standard pic of the obverse, but NO PIC OF THE REVERSE!!!

What, are you getting addle brained or something??? Such a beauty...like Rapunzel, vanquished to the tower...rescue her Randy, & then post good pics :snaphappy:...of BOTH sides!!!!:smuggrin::smuggrin::p We like PICTURES!!! :singing:

    We're waiting....:joyful::joyful::joyful:;)

Btw, leave it in that slab! ;)

Too funny. I will rescue her from the vault she has been in far too many years now and post her.

I believe PCGS numbers are random, so you are not going to get anything close to a precise date for the slab.

I always like the older slabs because it's a total guarantee that no one has messed with the coin in recent years. Plus it has given the coin a while to show the long-term effects if anyone messed with it before it was slabbed. Consequently, an older slab equals more confidence for me. That said, NICE Saint and cool dollar!

Looks like it has nice even color in a soft focus sort of way.
If it needs a new home , shoot me a PM :D
I too think it's a newer OGH, but still has the cool look.
Someday I'll get one for my stash.

I like the older holder pcgs. I’d leave it. Not much premium for higher grade as it’s basically a nice early bullion coin. So the holder is a plus

It could have potential for upgrade but you have to weigh that against grading fees. I would refrain from crack out unless needs dip.

once cracked out it’s on own
