My dealer has a box of silver dollars for $17.95 each. There are some 1921 Peace Dollars in there. I did not grade them...but they are at least EF. I should have just grabbed them, but I am new at this. My question is, are all 1921 Peace Dollars sought after, or do they have to be "high relief"? Or are they all high relief. Pleas help now, as I need to be there tomorrow at opening if this is a deal.
All '21 Peace dollars are high relief. And I can promise you that no dealer is going to sell '21 Peace dollars in XF for less than $20. Something's up with that.
No. Seriously. They are in a box with all the other circulated dollars. I asked him (stupid me!) if it was the 21's or 22's that were rare. He replied that the 22 high reliefs were rare, and that he culls stuff like that out. There are several circulated 21's in this box for $17.95 and Scrap Metal let them go! I will be back there tomorrow at 10:00 sharp!
Now there were 1921 Morgans in there. But there were also 1921 Peace Dollars. I just hope that I did not arouse his curiosoty with my questions.
The PCGS price guide (although admittedly probably inflated), lists a 1921 Peace Dollar in G4 as $110 and they go up from there. If a dealer has them for less than $20, I would suggest that they are likely either problem coins or not real. A dealer with any knowledge is very aware of what coins are worth and would price accordingly. Also, a 1922 high-relief Peace Dollar is VERY rare - I believe only a handful were minted. Hope this helps, Dan
It could be fake , but it could be a mistake , if you go back tomorrow & it's still there I'd buy it , look at it cosely and compare it to the 22s & 23s in the box if comparable get it , for $17 you can't go wrong . BTW all 21 peace $ are high relief. rzage
Buy at least 1 coin-fake or real. If it's real you've scored well. If it's a fake then you'll have a good? replica to compare a real '21 Peace dollars to. Remember, if it's real. BUY THEM ALL at that price. Bruce
Thank you all. I do appreciate your input. I was there the other day and he had about six silver dollars. Today he had several dozen, and a lot of 90% stuff that he just bought. I really think that he overlooked these. I have bought a bunch of bullion and ASE's from him, and never got the idea that he was crooked. I will look them over and compare the numbers and lettering to other Peace dollars. If I am at all uneasy about them, I will ask him to weigh them, as ryanbrooks suggested. 26.73 grams. Could be that they were just in a collection with the other dollars that he bought.
35,401 minted currently only one survivor known, certified by NGC in Aug of 2001. That's for the business strike of course. There are about a half dozen proofs as well.
FOLLOW UP: Well, I went back and the 1921 Peace Dollars were no longer in the box. I must have alerted him with my questions. Oh well...should have kept my mouth shut and consulted my book.
I guess that I did not make myself clear. He bought a whole bunch of silver dollars from a walk-in. My guess is that he dropped them in the $17.95 box with all of the other circulated Morgans and Peace Dollars by mistake. He did not have them individually priced in his show case. I think that I alerted him to his mistake when I asked about 21's and 22's. At any rate, they are gone.
don't feel bad, if you would have put those coins on the counter to purchase, they would not have gone for $18. Price tags in coin shops are about as useless as,.... um ,....somebody help me out here,.....
