Would like some input on this 1909 S VDB

I would appreciate any feedback on this coin.

Does it appear authentic?

It looks to me to have had a cleaning at some time, maybe an older one.

Would really need a closer pic of the mint mark to rule out the possiblity of that being tampered with.

 

Send it in to a TPG and get it authenticated.
For me, that's the only way to deal with higher priced coins.
And if you suspect cleaning, send it to ANACS. That way if it's real you'll get it slabbed even though it's been cleaned.
The other TPGs will body bag it and keep your money if it's been cleaned.

Definitely cleaned, and harshly. And I agree the VDB does look uncommonly sharp. Usually they ar not that bold.

Yes, it has been cleaned, so it wont slab at PCGS or NGC, but ANACS will do it. The coin appears genuine. Note the die chip in the upper loop of the mintmark, it must be there on ANY SVDB to be genuine.....also the off center position of the VDB and the shape of the B look dead on

In my opinion this coin is not authentic. The S is not as struck, it is a coin minted in Philadelphia. The S is misshapen and is sitting on some kind of residue. If you are considering purchasing it I would refrain. If you already own it you should attempt to return it.

You are exactly right, I am sOOOOO Embarrased. I had this auction pic on my screen in another window when I blew it up, a genuine coin. Mental lapse HUGE.

so this one is fake? If so I purchased it thru The American Precious Metals Exchange (APMEX). I will send it to ANACS and if they call it a fake I will try to return it to them.

This coin appears at least questionable. All SVDB's will have a die chip in the upper loop of the mint mark. This does not show it ( the coin I was looking at does ). It appears filled with dirt or something else like Chris said.

The chip should appear as a period , almost like yours would if it were upside down.

Again, I apologise. I have posted a seperate thread about this mistake, just to be sure it is seen and read by anybody who may have been influenced or mislead by my opinion.

Thanks Jack and Cave Troll. The Coin is on its way to ANACS. I used the 5 day turnaround. Again thanks for your help.

 

I would talk to the people you bought it from first to let them know what you are doing and to get their approval. Because by the time you get it back you will be way outside the return privilege time (not really a problem if it is fake because they can't pass good title to you on the purchase, but it is a reason they might use to balk) and because it will no longer be in their holder so they might argue that it may not be the coin they sent you. (Of course if you shot those pics you've probably already taken it out of their holder and voided the return privilege anyway.

 

I feel for ya Harryj, I don't have one of these in my collection, because of the cost, I may never.

This coin "is" however one of the most faked coins I've read about. Certainly because of its COST!

If I had the money to purchase a high grade SVDB, and I'd have to have a high grade, I would certainly purchased it slabbed by PCGS or NGC, most likely NGC because they seem to go for less in the same grade then PCGS. I would also crack that sucker out when I get it, because I'm never selling it.

Way to late but you should have tried contacting Chuck on www.coppercoins.com Since he has two books on just Lincoln Cents he could have told you for sure if real or not. There is a few pages on what a fake 09S VDB looks like in his books and he is always glad to help with anything about Lincoln Cents.
