Hello! I finally decided to look through the thick crust of this Northern Song Dynasty cash and to properly read and ID it. After looking at it further, I fell in love with the deep patina and wanted to share. Below it are some of my other favorite patinas on some of my Chinese cash coins. If you have any other Chinese or cash coins that feature cool patinas, please share them here! It is fun to toss these out Tuck: NORTHERN SONG: China Northern Song 960-1127 CE Huang Song Tong Bao 1038 CE H 16.113 China Northern Song 960-1127 CE Huang Song Tong Bao 1038 CE H 16.99 WANG MANG China Wang Mang 7-27 CE AE 5 Zhu Xin Dynasty - Emperor 5 Zhu stroke to lower left China Wang Mang 14-22 CE FSR 124 China Wang Mang 7-23 CE Hsin AE Cash Xiao Quan Zhi Yi H 9.14 QIN China Qin 220-180 BC AE 12 Zhu Ban Liang Blank H7.7 China Qin ban liang 221-206 BCE
I always found interest in the different attitude on cleaning we see between ancient Chinese coin collectors and those who collect Greek and Roman coins. I collect Greek and Roman so am not as attracted to some of the Chinese patinas shown here. However I do like my cash with a giraffe on the reverse.
Tang: Su Zong (756-762) 50 cash, H 14.105 Song: Hui Zong (1101-1125) 1 cash, H 16.441 I am also temporary custodian of this marvellous ban liang which actually incorporates some fabric into its patina!
These are all amazing pieces! I love the deep blue patinas like this. I've heard them called Peacock Patina.
One of my favorite Dynasty for art was Tang: China Tang CE AE Cash H 14.81 China Tang AE Cash H 14.101 China Tang 845-846 CE AE Cash Kai Yuan Tong Bao - Luo H 14.77 I love the Art of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), especially their interpretation of the Tang Horse...
I know only a little about these, yet I have accumulated a handful. As far as the Chinese I have, I love the deep blue tone to this Northern Song coin, even though it's pretty encrusted. And I also love this Japanese Kanei Tsuho, dating to I believe 1636-56 (according to the seller, haven't really researched it). It has a 'powdery' patina with a faint green hue and traces of orange, similar to the coins posted by @Andres2.
What a great idea, thanks for the all color cash coin show. Nice collection, I have cash that look similar yet never photoed them. I love bronze, so you really got my attention. Cheers
