In 1996 I heard about a counterfeit operation that was making fake toonies. The centers came out extremely easily.

I also heard that the 1996 toonies are legit but a flaw directly from the mint and was quickly fixed.

So there's 2 questions I have about these

Which of the above stories are true?

    and

If it was the second one and was quickly fixed, then why do I keep finding them?

I really Dont think that was ever fixed. No I havnt heard anything about the counterfeiting.. in fact.. I feel confident saying that was a Rumor.
all you do.. with any twoonie is put it in the freezer and tap it with a hammer

Yeah I agree with Snaz, the counterfeiting was probably just a rumor. I can't see making fake 2 dollar coins being very cost effective or profitable. Would be cheaper and easier to make fake $20s, I'd think.
