Anyone see why this didn't grade?

    Hey all,

What do you think? Is there anything that sticks out as a reason why this coin came back authenticity unverifiable?
I see some potential scratches/damage (when it's tilted at an angle) which could cause a details grade.
Note: I didn't submit this coin.

I don't know. The scratches you mentioned are probably correct for a detailed/damaged grade. I would have definitely submitted it, in hopes of it coming back PO1.

Maybe they couldn’t read the mm I think it’s an 89 cc

That's a good point. The TPG'ers have the be able to detect a date and MM.

Just curious. Are the counterfeiters into low ball coins?

I would be. PO1's fetch some nice dollars.

There are counterfeits of everything; if they can make some money on the item, then it's worth it (plus a low grade counterfeit might be easier to pass by compared to a higher grade).

    That could be it.
Does anyone know if there is something to look for to distinguish between an
1889-CC, 1889-O, and 1889 (no mintmark Philly issue)?

I'm thinking if there was, those markers are long gone.

Most likely true, but it was worth a try asking.

Well, you can read the date, so the unverifiable mintmark might have been the reason.

PS- I don't think it's scratches or anything. PO01 coins get a fair amount of leeway in that department, and this one is "better" than a lot I've seen. It's just very heavily worn. I don't think the few hairlines on it (which are consistent with this low grade) would have held it back from grading.

dunno maybe it was artificially worn then became a pocket piece for a while to hide artificial wear? I really don't care for P-01 so I never really looked into it.

I thought about this, too, but it looks naturally worn to me?

I really don't know for sure but it doesn't look natural to me. I looked at a couple of graded P-01 and it just seems like there is more wear on the wings in most cases. "Note" I do not know for sure this is just an assumption on my very limited knowledge of this grade.

Looks natural to me. Morgans carried around as pocket pieces tend to wear just like this. I have an 1885 Morgan I carry around. Although mine is not as worn(Between FR2 and AG3) it is wearing with the same pattern.

I would never make it as a professional coin grader ;)
