This is currently listed on eBay as an 1883/2. It definitely looks weird but it does not look like the 1883/2 variety to me, I was wondering what others think about it?
Not sure about these Don but possibly @Paddy54 might know. I "think" he has done some work on these. If mistaken my apologies.
With these types of specimens it's very hard to properly identify them. With the amount of wear your mind can often play tricks on you. I have a few DP hang cents that look like 1800 but are 1804. Again, if it is an 83/2, which it doesn't look like but you never know, you still have wear, possible cleaning, and corrosion to look out for. DO NOT get it graded. Just my advice. Worth around $50-$110 if it is so. Heres some photos of different specimens to help you on your identification journey. I tried to choose some with the amount of wear yours has. Let me know if you have any questions. NOTE TO EVERYONE TELLING ME TO STOP HELPING OUT, I NEVER SAID THAT HE HAD ONE, IM ONLY GIVING INFO FOR HIM TO SEE IF HIS FITS COIN THE DESCRIPTION OF AN AUTHENTIC ONE. ISN'T THAT WHAT WE DO HERE......HELP? Credit: Google images 2019 1883 or 1883/2 overdate Obverse: Filled in 8, with 3 over 2 (2 over two II2) Reverse: Not applicable Notes: The two will be closer to the left or closer to the southern end of the crack id#: 278787309
Agree and it needs to be repeated there is no 1882/3 overdate since they didn't have time travel then.
No...but I'll betcha that they had the same sort of edited we have here posting wrong information all day long.... another one, telling a poster oh you should have that graded.....why not it will make sure those lines from the brillo pad give it a matte finish look.... Even when you spell it out put a red flag on it and circle it....they are so dense....they are just clueless.......
My bad. Sorry, wouldn't want to help out aaaaaaand. reported. Its you old curmudgeons that are destroying the hobby for the millennial community. Just let people have opinions...an that's that
You literally edited your post 2 or 3 times and removed the part where you told the OP "it looks like you have one..." and changed it to "it doesn't look like it but you never know." You got caught with your pants down. Admit it. Cop to your mistake and move on.
Opinions are just that..... an opinion....the trouble here is you all .....just refuse to face facts....or even research them. ..... to entitled I guess.....you rather have one of us old farts do your leg work! Never have I ever seen a generation to lazy to learn... Report that too!
Everyone who wants to read Colby J.'s original post before he edited it, where he claims he believes the OP has the overdate, can read the original version where I quoted him in post number 8 of this thread.
Post #3 was the answer to any one who truly cared to find the "correct" answer. Clue #1 followed by clue #2 the link right to the correct answer! Spoon fed and still can't chew
These millennials would seem a lot smarter if they actually listened to the old curmudgeons once in awhile like I did when I was younger. I’m heading towards the curmudgeon now myself
Being a curmudgeon myself, I like the old saying about having all your ducks lined up. I have been wrong on numerous occasions and I hate giving myself a black eye. But I think you all have found that I will also fess up. That's why I deferred to Paddy in this case. And also why I will defer to John Wexler when in doubt. Some have just enough knowledge to be dangerous. I prefer not to be one of those.
It's a 2 that's worn. A 3 over a 2 has a line or crossbar from the underlying 2 going from the middle to the bottom pointsbon the 3. Very distinctive if you know what to look for. It should be in your Red Book and it's very much like the 3 over 2 Jefferson War Nickel.
