First sorry for the mediocre cell phone photos. I bought this a few weeks ago and sent it in and just got it back today as not genuine from NGC. It got past me and two other dealers. No telling who else has bought this as a genuine coin over the years. Just wanted to post it so people can use it as a reference. I'm pretty sure it's part of the Bay City counterfeits. In hand it's chocolate with purple toning and luster.

The giveaway is how bold the date is in contrast to the poorly transferred details of the rest of the coin.

Ouch. I am afraid I would have been fooled by that one myself. Sorry that happened to you.

The head size is wrong and the date is all wrong. Those 2 dealers that got fooled..... they should not be dealers if they can't detect that.

Edit to add. It's not a natural color and has VF20 details, so even if it was real it would be a problem coin. But as NGC noted, it's fake.

That is completely the wrong head and font style for an 1841. They weren’t used until 1843. And that’s without looking closer for other tells.

Those dealers should not be dealers.

Nope. It is Chinese in origin. I believe the host coin for the dies was an 1847. @Jack D. Young

All I know is it was a lesson for me. Thankfully it's only costing me the grading fees. I am not a large cent collector at all but they were a fair price so I figured I'd give them a shot. Thank you guys for pointing out some of the stuff to me.

Here's what the head and date of a real 1841 should look like. See the differences?

Yes I see the difference on the obverse but what I've noticed instantly was on the reverse United States of America that's touching on most of my coin and easily separated on the original.

Here is a genuine 1841 cent. As you can see, it is quite a bit different from your coin with respect to the date vs. the bust. I am not a large cent die variety expert, but I think that this is significant.
