The color the coin appears in the photo is the same as the coin is in person. It is dark, that is the way most Indian heads clean up with peroxide after being in the ground and the green patina is removed.
What ya think? Still a little blob of dirt on the 7 and by libertys nose but I'm leaving it alone now.

Wow - amazing results after being in the ground!!! When you used peroxide did you just dip it, or did you have to gently agitate it in the solution?

What I do is put the coin in a small glass bowl and add enough peroxide to cover the coin. I then place the bowl w/coin in the microwave for 10 seconds. I then let the peroxide do its stuff. It bubbles and fizzies for about 15 minutes. I then take out the coins and gently scrub the dirt off with a soft bristle toothbrush. If I like the looks of it I leave it alone if it needs some more cleaning I'll repeat with fresh peroxide.

Have always known that you are not to clean coins but this is what I do with dug up coins. I'm not tryiing to recommend cleaning on this forum because generally its a bad thing but I found it I'll do what I want. So na na na na na. :)

The main reason this coin came out so good doesn't have much to do with me really. Its our Michigan soil and the condition the coin was in when dropped. I just am lucky to find it.

Nice cleaning job! In this case it was warranted. Now I'll have to experiment with peroxide and the microwave.

Thanks for the advice Jim on the cleaning. I agree usually cleaning is bad, but like you said it was more than warranted in this case - IMHO...nice find and thanks for sharing the tip!

Nope only bronze and copper items. Nickels I have tried a lot of different things but none I liked the results of. Clad I would just tumble and silver I just rinse the dirt off and leave em. If silver is stained real bad from being in watery areas I will use a little baking soda between my fingers with a little water UNLESS they are valuable them I wont do the baking soda thing.
