We found a box of rolled pennies at my mother in laws. So far they have been early 60s. Don’t know how she acquired them. If she bought “new” rolls at the bank or picked them out of the cash register where she works. Just opened a roll of ‘63Ds. At a glance they look uncirculated but at examination I found some looked new on both sides and some looked great on one side while the other side looked worn. And some looked lousy on both sides. But all of them have a raised “sharp” edge. I would assume time in circulation would dull that quickly. Was ‘63 a bad year for Denver pennies? Perhaps a poor run? We’re they gathered from the cash register? Or am I too inexperienced with new pennies?
Lots of varieties for the 60s LMCs. In the high state of your coins you should have a potential for few valuable cents (dollars but not $10s). Have fun searching and take care not to overly handle your coins.
Ok I need more info. I fully expected to be told I had 50 coins worth about $.01 each and that may be a high estimate. Now I hear the term “high quality”. To me they mostly are unappealing but the sharp rim confused me as I was not expecting them to have it. And there are probably another dozen unopened rolls. I also have opened another dozen with only a few that I put aside. So are the ones with the rough surfaces possibly of some limited value? I’ve come to believe coins had to be practically pristine to be worth anything. I will NEVER understand this hobby.
I purchase uncirculated rolls all the time. Based on storage conditions mint luster varies. For instance, the edge of the coin might be red-brown while the obverse/reverse may be red and show luster. Also, coin contact in the hopper/bag contribute to the damage that may appear on the coin. This is to be expected. As more damage is observed, the lower grade it will get. Uncirculated rolls generally start out with a MS grade. Maybe between 60-65. But some could be higher. These exceptions, especially when associated with an RPM or DDO/DDR make for improved value to collectors. Too much damage less desirable or not at all.
If you're into it, the eighties are great for varieties. Nice find but the fibers from paper towels will stick to the coins.
