Almost everyones favorite collectable coins are pennies. In 2009, the US mint is redesigning the Lincoln penny, The obverse will remain the same, hovever the reverse will change. The changes every 3 months in 2009 will be: Lincoln's Birth in Kentucky (1809-1816) Formative Years in Indiana (1816-1830) Professional Life in Illinois (1830-1861) Presidency in Washington, DC (1861-1865) Just a few questions about the new penny and its affects on the Nusmatic World. 1. Is the penny redesign only for a year? Will it be more? Is the 100 year old Lincoln cent going away? Has anyone heard any rumors? 2. Will the new design increase the values of Wheaties and Memorial Cents more than Average. 3. Will the New Cents be "highly Collectable". Should we purchase them and proofs? Penny's are minted in huge quantities now. 4. Maybe most importantly, will key dates of the Lincoln increase more in value than standard? What does everyone think? Thanks
IMO I think these will be as collectible as my belly button Lint. every citizen in America Will have one of these.. Kinda like the state quarters, or our Olympic quarters. I would much rather see the 100 year aniversary Cent Look like this.. It would be much more sentimental IMO. EDIT: ok.... maybe a little more collectible than belly button lint I got carried away
Hi Harryj, Albeit a little slow on the salutation, Welcome to CoinTalk! As for your questions... I can only attest to the fourth one... key dates seem to be going up in price even as I type. I seriously doubt the new penny could even touch the original in popularity, even in another 100 years. In my opinion Snaz is right... the new Lincoln should be just like the original. And, I think it would be appropriate for it to have the same metal composition as the original. I would be happy to donate all my unused copper cents to the mint if I could get one set of real Lincoln cents like the first ones minted. jeankay
(((belly button Lint))) Hey Snaz, are you going to auction this off on e--y, or maybe offer it here? It is probably worth its weight in gold (-plated nickels). jeankay
1. Yes 2. Someone with ESP might be able to answer this, but you will find several threads here re: how hot Lincolns presently are. As to the future, I think they have already climbed most of the way. I do not expect them to drop from here, but how much further they go is anyone's guess. 3. If you are dying to make money, don't bother. 4. The biggest increase I have seen are the pre 1934 red unc's and the 1930 - 1958 premium unc's (mostly MS67's). However, virtually any of the more unusual date has gone up in the better conditions.
BTW - I believe that nearly every member here would like to see a 2009 wheat back cent. I think I would even buy one if the Franklin mint came out with a descent looking one.
2009-SVDB in original composition? I would buy my first mint product since the 82' Washington Half I have never researched it, but I bet Washington quarters, before/after the state program started could be an indicator, after all, collector demand drives prices in a steady market I think in the Lincolns, we are seeing alot of attention paid in anticipation of 09', how long these prices can last is beyond me..........
I recall reading somewhere that there will be a reissue of the original design for collectors. And in the original composition. Am I deluded or did I really read this?
Definitly JeanKay.. I would Love to see it the same composition too Then I would buy one. and the belly button lint on ebay eh.....
the new lincoln.................. we're doomed! we already know how congress works...........they'll NEVER go for something that the public might like! look what's happened to the prez bucks and sacks!?
Don't even start me on the idiocy (and idiots) in Congress. Suffice it to say, those may be some of their better laws.
Well Grizz, what we need to do is to let the government think it is their idea from the start and I am sure they will come up with a way to make the coin cost several times more than the actual cost and they will present a 'bill' to be voted on, then they will add some very important pork-barrel stuff like clear acrylic toilet seats with left over jet engine parts they didn't need anyway embedded in them and we might get our new properly minted Lincoln cent. jeankay
I also can't believe they missed the boat on the 2009S-VDB wheatback. I don't think they realize just how many they could have sold. Personally I think the designs they have chosen are weak to say the least. I'm sure they will sell many and they will be hot for a while, but I bet they cool off quick.
1. Yes, it is only for one year. No it won't be more, and no the old design isn't go away (well not forever anyway; it will be in 2009, but it will be back in 2010, barring some future act of Congress.) Yes, people have heard rumors. 2. It may spark a little more interest in Lincoln cents but I doubt it will significantly increase the value of existing ones. 3. Yes, they are collectible in the sense you can in fact collect them. If they spark your interest, sure. However if your asking whether they'll be a great investment, I doubt it; they'll be minted in too large quanities to significantly appreciate within less than a generation or two. 4. Key dates will probably continue to go up gradually... there are more and more collectors, increasing demand, and the supply is fixed... but see #2; I don't think the value of key dates will go up much because of the new pennies.
lincoln what we really need is a.............................................COIN COLLECTING CONGRESS!!
I am looking forward to the reverse 08 errors, zinc copper or copper zinc error, small date large date, etc...........
Question 1 & 3 are... 1. Yes,wheat cents will appreciate in value. 3. Issue of new design cent will get attention and non collectors as well as collectors will hoard them. Yes, buy all the mint sets available... good investment.
I hope that our fantastic USMint will not start making all kinds of the 2009 cent. What I mean is they usually go overboard lately with just about everything. If they do what they are getting famous for they will re issue the 1909, 1909S and the 1909S VDB with Wheat backs, modern backs, several posses of Lincoln, maybe the Jefferson house now on the Nickel just to make things different. Then there may be one cent with each word of the Gettysburg address so that you have to accumulate thousands to read them. As with the weak attempt to ruin the Nickel, State Quarters, the silly bicentennial Quarters, now the baby sized dollars, I really think the Mint will do just one more dumb thing. I'm sure the next thing will be a cent with your own picture on them. I saw at the post office you can order an official US stamp with your own photo on them. So why not coins?
