I bought a really eclectic lot of coins on ebay. The first one is 21 1/2 mm and 4 g.The second one is 24 mm and 3.2 g. The second one seems to be dated 1788. Anyone know something on these?
I am pretty sure they are not. 1st one looks like "maybe" William" and the second looks like a Jeton of some sort. I am no expert though.
The first coin is a William III farthing (1695-1700). You can just barely make out 'GVLIELMVS' on the obverse and the weight and size are within range. Not sure about the second coin. I found a William III halfpenny metal detecting last year on the 4th of July and it's one of my favorite coins. It's also my profile pic
There are many different dates and dies for the spade guinea tokens, I did a quich look online and found 1788, 1790, 1791, 1797, 1701, 1800, and 1802 they also come undated. The also come with different inscriptions. Some mimic the latin abbreviations seen on the real guineas, but one of the more common legends is "In Memory of the Good Old Days". There is actually a book/catalog on these that lists around 1000 different varieties.
