This was an exciting day folks. I got to hold a raw 1856 Flying Eagle today. I wish I had my camera with me along with $15 K. The coin was a super nice chocolate brown. Just thought I would share it with you guys. It had my heart pumping. My dealer bought the complete set of FE and Indians for 55K. WOW I wish I was rich!

WOW Tom, thats pretty cool. That would get my heart pumping as well, WAY more for some odd reason than the 1913 Liberty Nickle has.....

    Cool !!

Very cool. :) I have got to hold 2 of them. But one was only 9k and the other was 17k. And yes - it made me very nervous. I was so scared I might drop one of them.

This one was in a plastic flip but yes I was nervous and I could not stop looking at the 6 of the date.

I was like that when a dealer let me look at an 1895 Morgan, I held my breath, lol

I am always on the lookout for counterfeit and altered coins. Whenever I see an 1856 FEC I immediately look at the 5 in the date. On a genuine coin the left edge of the vertical stroke of the 5 bisects the ball on the bottom loop of the 5. FECs dated 1858 can be altered by changing the last 8 in the date to a 6 BUT the 5 in the date is a dead giveaway because the left edge of the vertical stroke of the 5 falls to the left of the ball on the bottom loop of the 5.

Very true, I have Rick Snow's book as well. What i though was cool was that this collection just walked in from the street. My dealer said he was completely shocked!! The rest of the collection was all original high grade. The lowest coin was the 09 S in XF 45. All of the other keys are AU or higher. The 77 was a nice MS 64. Tom

I've never held a raw rarity.
    Wouldn't want to.
My hands would start to sweat and shake.
I could easily cost the owner a couple thousand.

    I've held a slabbed 1895 Morgan.
But my best in-hand coin was a slabbed 1944 steelie Lincoln (MS-61)

That's cool Tom! Are we coin geeks or what?

Severaly years ago my dealer won an estate collection. 2 1856 proof, one business strike and a sweet 55DDO Lincoln.
Some big dogs from New York flew in to buy them but not before I held them.

    We are such geeks!;)

60 years ago, I saw 3 1856 FEC at one time. 2 in the collection of Creston I Shoemaker & 1 belonging to Authur Glauner. Both of Downingtown, PA. All of the items were sold to support their widows when they pasted. Shoemaker was my Uncle.

I can still remember how nervous I was the day I held the 1933 Double Eagle when I was considering buying it

Just kidding the most expensive coin I have ever held was a nice XF 1909-S VDB that was a dealers at the local flea market. My brother was whispering "run run run!" to me the whole time and I guess the dealer saw me almost bust out laughing so he asked for it back haha =P

It's ok Bone, I never held anything really valuable until that time. I think the most expensive coin I touched prior to the 56 FE was a nice vf 1877 indian. Tom

Just out of curiosity, was the 1856 slabed, and if so what was the variety, S-3 S-9 ect. I'm looking to upgrade my S-3. If your dealer has a Slabed S-3, i might be willing to make him an offer............
