I'm new to collecting so never paid attention in the past and I know it's going to be awhile (because I doubt it's like with new cars) but I was wondering when will the new coins for 2020 be out?

Yeah. Next year. I usually don't find the new U.S. coins in my change until April or as late as July every year where I live. Not sure why that is. If I went through more coins than I do, maybe I'd see them earlier.

I was on a research visit overseas this summer and had the luck to interview a former engraver and executive with a national mint. He said they start minting the coins in his country starting right away in the first week of the new year for circulation coins.

Take no offence my friend (OP) as we all have a sense of humor about this place.......I hope you do too. Welcome to the mix and the mud.....:)

Actually, I believe there was an early release coin posted a few weeks ago. The OP claimed it was from the year 9661...until it was pointed out the coin was upside down.:D:eek:;)

It depends on which coins. US coins from 2020 won't be available until 2020.
However, other countries (like Australia) have already started releasing 2020 coins (like the Lunar Series).

Like I said I didn't think they were like new cars available before the new year hit I admit I don't know a lot but never said I was a DeDeDe. Proud to say I've never ridden a short bus in my life. Also I'm a firm believer in being able to laugh at myself.

By law all US coins are supposed to have the date of coining on them. In theory that would mean that they could not make them until after Jan 1st, but the mint reads it to mean that they can't be RELEASED before January 1st, and the Mint commonly strikes up a stockpile of new coins for the coming year during December so they are on hand on Jan 2nd. On RARE occasions a coin for the coming year accidentally get mixed in with the current year and slips out.

My wonderful local coin dude always sells full mint rolls for a couple of bucks around February every year.

I was in Italy in 1997 and their mint sets were a year behind, so all that I could buy for both Italy and Vatican proof sets were 1996 sets. The 1997s hadn't even started minting. So one never knows.

Several countries are like that, that is why the Krause Coin of the Year competition is always for coins dated two years earlier.

That all depends on where you live. My area has barely seen 2019 coins. Other more populated areas the new coins show up in January or February.

Online release begins 1st Thursday in January 2020.

That is, I bet it's the same as previous years. Like this: 2019 Product Schedule

But I've no idea when you'll find 2020 coins in circulation -- which is probably what you're asking. ;)

Cool info! Hey, Conder where could I get a quote on the fact that they strike 'em up in December? Has that been revealed in US Mint publications of any kind?

I received a 2019 Cent in change this morning. I stopped for biscuits and gravy at my local Hardee's on my way home from the flea market. It's the 5th or 6th 2019 coin I've found in circulation this year. New coins just don't make it into circulation in this area of PA.

New 1964 nickels were produced in 1967. So the next time you are holding one you can wonder if it’s 55 years old or just 52.
