Just out of curiosity, I entered "silver penny" in the CT Search and found 183 posts (10 pages) for this subject. Chris
If you like it, you can make your own https://www.sciencecompany.com/Turn-Copper-Pennies-Into-Silver-and-Gold-Pennies.aspx
It's not silver. It's not on a wrong planchet. The 1st and easiest test is to weigh it, since the plating is so thin, it won't really affect the weight. Copper pennies weigh 3.11 there is a slight +/- range but almost all of them weigh 3.1. If the coin you have a question about weighs 3.1 that pretty much eliminates almost everything. A key component is the fact that your penny has full and complete penny rims. Since most foreign coin are going to be different sized than US coins, if it were struck on a silver planchet it has to be smaller than a penny, as a larger coin would not fit. If it was a smaller silver coin, the rims on your penny would not be full and complete.
Agreed Confederate currency would be more interesting than a "silver penny" which 99.9999999% of the time turns out to be just plated. (Of course unfortunately, it should probably be posted in the currency forum.)
Well, the Zinc/Copper Clad plating didn't start happening until 1982...correct? It should be 100% brass. However, maybe someone tried to change it with the link above and only coated one side. Now, during the early 80's, like in the early 70's the mint was experimenting with aluminum. Could this be one of those tests?
The aluminum Cent was in 1974. https://www.usmint.gov/news/inside-the-mint/1974-experimental-aluminum-cent-project
