I acquired this silver drachm at an affordable price due to low condition. The portrait looks quite fair and clear to me. I liked it beside bearing in mind that it includes a few centigrams of gold. The coin weighs 3.33 g. Please post a comment.
Well, it is a nice Shapur I drachm, the portrait with the earflaps. An innovative and popular type of its day: large and thin.
The ragged flan is a minus for me, but it is a nice portrait, and if you got it at a good price and you like it, then my opinion doesn't really matter anyway I am intrigued by your statement that this coin contains a small amount of gold. I don't recall reading that about Shapur I drachms (or any other Sasanian silver coins). What's your source for this statement?
I know nothing about Sasanian coinage (congratulations on your new coin, @7Calbrey ) but I received an email from the Royal Numismatic Society about a major new publication on the topic. A PDF of the prepublication offer is attached.
Thanks a lot for your kind replies. @Parthicus..I learned that issue on this site. A comprehensive thread had been posted on that gold amount in Sassanian silver coins. Also , I remember that Master Doug showed us a full list of the gold percentage in every related coin. For instance, the coins of Khusro have a relatively high amount. Note that nowadays the value of one centigram of gold is almost equal to one gram of silver. Please try to check about this matter.
