To get a feel started for detecting a doubled die, look on the reverse side of 2000-2008 LMCs. Look around the seated Lincoln in the Memorial and in the adjacent bays. You should find ‘bulges’ from the columns into the bays fairly quickly. Some larger and some smaller. Largest ones may be attributed and if in a high state, have a small premium. For obverse doubling, 1989 and 2006 have always been productive. Most doubling for these are in the date. Once you develop a feel you’ll expand your detection methods and find more coins. Oh, and the master hub doubling for the 1972 cents. Worthless but it will educate you on what you’re looking for.
Kevin...interesting advice! I suck at all this but lately Ive come to the determination that I need to start looking at "newer" coins. I always looked for coins pre 60s for various reasons. Once I started looking at newer coins I realized that the condition made everything a ton easier. With less PMD and wear to interfere, I could get a better overall look at the coin. It seems easier to "eliminate" real doubled dies when a coin is in better condition.
