Grade opinions please on this 1886-O Morgan Dollar. I couldn't get a good close up of the line that goes from the corner of the lip. Looks like it was indented into the coin so I guess post mint. Thanks in advance.

Is this a proof? PR-62 would be my grade. But I am still learning.

No. Not a proof. Proofs only made in Philly that year. Added some more pictures. Looks like it was cleaned in the past. Can see the lines especially on the top of the reverse.

It looks like it was polished at some time.

Yeah..too bad. Doesn't look that polsihed in hand. So net grade AU55 or so cleaned or polished sound about right?

It's AU55. I would like to see a better picture without the camera's reflection to determine if it's cleaned.

I'd say low MS. O mintmarked Morgans often show little detail toward the center of the coin, such as the eagle's breast area. Aside from that, I see little evidence of wear. But, it definately looks cleaned.

Here is with 2 different cameras. I think it was cleaned at some time but higher grade for a tough year. Last 2 pictures using a photo studio in a box. Other photos using natural light.

Thanks Guy. ANACS running a special on grading morgan dollars. 10 bucks per coin min of 10 coins max value per coin $500. So was looking through a bunch of Morgans to send in to grade. I didn't even remember I had that 1886-O. For some reason I had it in an album under 1886 so was a pleasant surprise to find it.

Are the lack of luster and no cartwheel effect determining you guys to write polished or cleaned?

this is only my opinion, but i am inclined to think this will get a cleaned or polished designation (details or body bagged).

the reason being the lack of details above the ear and hairlines on the obverse, as well as the near complete lack of details on the reverse breast tho it has wing detail.
i do not believe this is a strike problem as it is a polishing. i cannot tell the luster detail of the pic tjho there are spots in a few of the denticles as well as hairlines evident throughout the fields.
once gain, this is only my observations from the pics and lighting provided.
thank you for sharing your coin....steve

This particular coin is not a dramatic weak strike, but it does have weak strike indicators above the ear and the breast. In some of the pictures provided. Most of the 1886-O entered circulation, and the reason they are most valuable in MS grades.

I bought a solid roll of this date, a few years back, and they looked to have been cleaned. However, I submitted several to ANACS and none came back cleaned. Keep in mind, theses coin where littered with marks like small straight lines, but where not cleaned.

Often, 1886-O Morgans, obtain circulation "lines" from slot machines and banging against other coins, or rubbing together in pockets and bags, or from handling. This is not a definitive statement that the coin in question is not cleaned, but I offer these comments for consideration only.

The only method for an honest consensus on the coins condition is an in-hand examination. I would consider a submission to ANACS. At the least, the coin would be net graded.
