So, I bought a roll of BU Lincoln Wheat Cents on ETSY last week. I got the roll today and went through the roll and I found 13 with die cracks. Here are the pictures of the one that looks like it is affected the most.
I'd guess that the roll came that way from the mint in 1958. I have a bunch of mint rolls from 1958 through about 1964. I got them at the time because the design was changing and I wanted some rolls before and after. I just opened some of them this year with similar results. Not the same condition as yours, but several coins in one roll with the same condition. Nice find, it sure is fun.
I common occurrence in the 50's. Nice to have them in BU. And awesome to study. Can you notice any die progression between them?
That is quite a fractured skull. Die chip in liberty, along with a cauliflower ear. A pretty good wreck of a die.
I would call in a few experts. (I'm not one). IMO it looks more like a lamination issue the a die crack Ask @Fred Weinberg; @JCro57; @paddyman98; @furryfrog02; @desertgem; et al.
But he said he found 13 of them. 13 lamination issue coins in a roll cant really happen Meow thinks. Unless a really bad batch of planchets. But if the anomalies are all similar, it has to be just a die issue.
Pass, could you post at least 3 of the coins . And are they all same date or varied? I agree it appears like a lamination, but I also agree with Meow that the percentage, unless it was a collections of laminations from a collector, but they should not be any exact duplicates if that was the case, just all with laminations of some sort. Yes...very cool. Here are some pictures of it just starting out. So, I just bought 2 more rolls of BU for $20 each out of the 4 rolls left.
The two pictures above are two more pennies out of the roll. The initial post was the coin with the most die cracks on the head. The pennies are all 1958 P. I just order two more rolls out of 4 rolls left. they last four rolls were also 1958P. I am hoping to get more die cracks out of the next two rolls. Edited: Any B/S/T offer must be in the classified areas. not the coin forums
Just a follow-up. I ended up buying 3 unopened rolls, all with 1958 (no mint mark) being Philidephia. Out of 150 pennies, 57 have die cracks on the head and bottom middle coat. 4 pennies have an extra neck that looks like a jugular and one penny has an interesting build-up next to the tie. Plus, the majority of all 57 coins also have a build-up on the reverse located on the "T". See pics attached
Looks like your coins mostly came from the same dies. I have found that several times with mint rolls. Fun.
So check this out. While going through these 150 coins, 10 of them had this build-up at the neck. Plus, a weird-looking "L" in Liberty that looks like it sunk into the surface of the coin.
