I wonder if anyone could identify this ancient coin. It looks like silver and weighs 3.9 grams. it's rather thin and is 22 mm in diamter. Also, does it look real? Thanks, Mike.
Nice, this is a silver AR Antoninianus issued by Postumus with Hercules reverse. Like this https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=114271 Not an expert but looks genuine to me.
Genuine hmmmm..Portrait looks off and the lettering strange but it is Postumus and his coins can vary drastically..Probably just the photo...
Howdy Mike, I don't know Postumus coinage so will withhold any opinions, but can you tell us how you came across the coin?
I consider this one of the more interesting of the common coins of Postumus. There is some controversy over the meaning of the legend as discussed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postumus I favor the theory that Postumus may have been from Deuso but the fact is we really do not know. I prefer not to comment on whether a coin is real or fake based solely on the photos. If you want genuine coins, buy them from dealers whose opinion on the matter you trust. The type also comes in bronze (double sestertius).
What is truly interesting about the usurper Postumus was that his coins from his breakaway, Gallic, rump, empire was that they were, on average, heavier , better fabric and image and higher percentage of silver than the coins being put out by the official mints of the empire at the same time.
