I've got many favorite coins but the one I'm posting today has special significance. It was purchased exactly 14 years ago to this day from Freeman & Sear's Mail Bid Sale 12. It is a very common gold coin, however, this example is one of the finest in existence. I've seen scores of these coins at auction over the last decade but only a couple have been close to my example .
Not my coin. Unfortunately your controls are not visible, but high probability is this coin. Note on your monogram: possibly represents the magistrate who signed this type of coin at Antioch. Not much info otherwise. I'm on the verge of opening the 1st section on my website that has hundreds of examples of Seleucus I. I also plan on having pages dedicated to countermarks, but that will be a much longer wait.
Thank you, David. That is a lovely specimen - I will add it to my reference material for this coin. I look forward to seeing your Seleucus / countermark website.
I cannot say I have a favorite coin. I have a number some of them because I just acquired them or that they started a particular line of inquiry or .... I just like them. This one is among my favorites. This one because the portrait is so compelling. This individual is not handsome far from it he looks like some one you would not like to meet in a dark alley (or even one at high noon). Tetradrachm of Philetairos Pergamon 269-263 B.C. Westermark O III Rv 2 16.99 grms 29 mm
Not a perfect example but one of the coins I refuse to replace with a better example. Thick dark copper, nice weight. I have owned it since the start of my collection. 1987A ANDRONICUS AE TETARTERON S-1987 DOC 6 CLBC 5.4.2 20 views OBV Bust of Virgin nimbate orans, wearing tunic and maphorion; beardless, nimbate head of Christ on breast. My Caesar - elephant denarius that I use as my icon. The politics, moment in history and the debate of the possible meanings make it my favorite, most interesting coin.
If I ever am fortunate to add a Shekel of Tyre or a Tribute Penny to my collection, this will still stand as my favourite: The Widow's Mite. Erin
Wow, thats amazing... thats a lot of coins of AP! Would you happen to have a site? My fav coin, well, depends how one defines favorite. But a special one is my first one, a gift from a friend. It started it all.
I have a number of favourite coins. At the moment this one is a top 5 favourite. Domitian AR Denarius. Rome 88 CE (Group 2) Obv: Head laureate r; IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERMANIC COS XIII Rev: Minerva Minerva stg l with thunderbolt and spear; CENS P.P.P. There was a time when I also thought this was a tremendous number, but, really, it is amazing what decades in this hobby can wrought.
I have been an addict for 45 years now, and, indeed, coins keep rolling in..... As for Mr AP, I have not yet gotten to posess half his RIC numbers and there are so many variants... Gold I do not collect because of the prices asked. Prices for good coins are really up these days.
This one I just bought yesterday: IMP T AELIVS CAE-SAR ANTONINVS bare head right TRIB -POT COS PIETAS (in ex??) / S - C Pietas standing left, raising right hand and lowering left, over two togate figures on both sides. Probably RIC Hadr 1085. I had to adjust the dealer's picture as it was taken on a brightly colored piece of advertisement paper - hence the strange colors around. I do have a better specimen, but this one is so rare, I just had to have it. What it cost? just over $40 including shipment.
