Hi, I received the coin (or medal) below with a large box of coins and bills in an auction. The coin is heavily worn, but has the date '1776' in a Times-like font, and what appears to be a building or a cityscape (or a ship?) ab ove it and barely distinguishable. The top of the front as well as the back are worn smooth. I have been through resources on early American, British, and some European countries but haven't found anything comparable. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
No idea, but when I looked @ the pic I immediately thought it looked like the state of Kentucky. But "1776"?
The back is smooth (pic below). So smooth that I wonder if it is a medal or commemorative item, rather than a coin.
Way to go Detective! @StevetheDomer I'm wondering if it was struck using the US Mint equipment that was located at the Centennial Exhibition. I have this medal that was struck onsite during the exhibition. Could there be others? 76mm, 9mm from rim to rim Chris
